Alloy 926 (UNS N08926, W.Nr. 1.4529, NAS 255NM) is a super-austenitic stainless steel containing 6-7% Mo, 19-21% Cr, 24-26% Ni, 0.5-1.5% Cu, and 0.15-0.25% N with an iron base. Unlike traditional nickel alloys, iron is the base element in 926. Bar stocks are in accordance with ASTM B649/ASME SB649 and have approvals of VdTÜV.

The defining metric is a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of approximately 47. It provides reliable Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT) that reaches 65-70°C in 6% FeCl₃ per ASTM G48. Nitrogen at 0.15-0.25% strengthens the austenite matrix, raising minimum yield to 300 MPa (43.5 ksi) with 40% elongation in the solution-annealed condition (1150-1200°C / 2100-2192°F, water quench). The melting range falls between 1320-1390°C. Impact toughness holds at ≥125 J/cm² even at -196°C, confirming cryogenic suitability.

This makes 25-6MO bar a competitive substitute for higher nickel alloys in chloride and seawater environments. Diameters span 5-500 mm, and lengths are 1-12 m. Forms: round, hex, flat, square bars, forged bars. Temperature: -196°C to 400°C (VdTÜV approved). We can supply Cronifer 1925 hMo bar stock with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports.

Chemical Composition of Incoloy 926 Round Bar

Incoloy 926 stock is available according to VdTÜV 502 and ASTM B649 specifications to guarantee the correct UNS N08926 chemical composition.

Iron (Fe) Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Molybdenum (Mo) Nitrogen (N) Copper (Cu) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Sulphur (S)
Balance 24.0 – 26.0 19.0 – 21.0 6.0 – 7.0 0.15 – 0.25 0.5 – 1.5 0.02 max 2.0 max 0.5 max 0.010 max

Mo at 6-7% and N at 0.15-0.25% yield a PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N) ≈ 47. Nitrogen also stabilises the austenite phase and reduces intermetallic formation during thermal processing. The 0.02% C max keeps the alloy resistant to sensitisation.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM B649 Incoloy 926 Bar

The following table provides information about the mechanical properties of solution-annealed Incoloy 926 bars with a diameter, according to VdTÜV 502 specifications.

Yield Rp0.2 (min) Yield Rp1.0 (min) Tensile Strength Elongation (min) Impact, 20°C (min) Impact, -196°C (min)
300 MPa (43.5 ksi) 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) 650 MPa (94 ksi) 40% ≥150 J/cm² ≥125 J/cm²

Elevated-temperature Rp0.2: 230 MPa at 100°C, 190 MPa at 200°C, 170 MPa at 300°C, 160 MPa at 400°C. Yield exceeds 904L (240 MPa) due to nitrogen solid-solution strengthening. Alloy 926 is not age-hardenable.

Machining, Hot Working & Welding of Incoloy 926 Round Bar

Alloy 926 work-hardens faster than standard austenitic grades due to Mo and N content. Use rigid setups, carbide tooling, and generous coolant. Plan intermediate annealing for cold reductions above 15%.

Hot work at 900-1200°C. Place bars in a furnace already at 1200°C. Cool rapidly in water or air after forming. Follow with solution annealing at 1150-1200°C and water quench. No ageing treatment applies; 926 is not precipitation-hardenable.

Weld by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, or SAW using overmatching fillers: INCONEL 625, C-276, or INCO-WELD 686CPT to maintain pitting resistance at the weld. Minimise dilution with controlled torch technique and larger root openings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Incoloy 926 Differ from 904L for Round Bar Applications?

Alloy 926 has higher Mo (6-7% vs 4-4.5%) and nitrogen (0.15-0.25% vs none), yielding a PREN of 47 vs 36 and higher yield (300 vs 240 MPa). It is the direct upgrade from 904L where aggressive chloride pitting demands more resistance.

Yes. VdTÜV 502 approves use from -196°C to 400°C. Impact toughness at -196°C is ≥125 J/cm², confirming suitability for LNG and cryogenic service.

B649 covers cold-worked and hot-finished bar, rod, and wire. B472 covers bars for forging applications. Both reference UNS N08926.

Priced between 316L/904L and higher-nickel alloys (825, C-276). Cost depends on diameter, quantity, and Mo/Ni market rates. Contact Nicorex Alloys for a quotation.
