ER2209 Welding Wire - TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire Supplier in India
Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified Mumbai-based stockist and supplier of ER2209 duplex stainless steel welding wire. We provide these wires classified under AWS A5.9 / ASME SFA-5.9.
ER2209 (UNS S39209) is a 22Cr-9Ni-3Mo-N solid wire that produces a duplex (austenite-ferrite) weld deposit with 30-50% ferrite in an austenite matrix. ER2209 duplex stainless steel filler wire is the recommended filler metal for welding Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803/S32205) base metal. It offers high yield strength along with immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) at a significantly lower cost than nickel alloy fillers. ER2209 carries the EN ISO 14343-A designation W 22 9 3 N L (G 22 9 3 N L). It is deliberately over-alloyed by 2-3% nickel to compensate for nitrogen loss and promote austenite formation during cooling. The wire has a typical PREN of about 36. ER2209 is supplied as TIG rods (1.6, 2.4, 3.2 mm), MIG wire spools (0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6 mm), and SAW wire (2.4, 3.2, 4.0 mm), and can be used for all-position welding with DCEN (TIG) and DCEP (MIG). It is mainly used in offshore oil and gas, desalination, chemical processing, pulp and paper, mining, marine, and other seawater- and chloride-exposed process piping systems.
Heat input control between 0.5-2.5 kJ/mm and nitrogen-bearing back purge gas (Ar + 2-5% N₂) on root welds are the two critical process requirements. Duplex 2304, LDX 2101, and dissimilar duplex-to-carbon-steel joints. Every shipment includes EN 10204/3.1B mill test certificates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of ER2209 Duplex welding wire per kg in India?
The price depends on the wire size, type, order quantity, and current nickel and molybdenum prices. ER2209 costs more than ER316L but less than ER2594 or nickel alloy fillers. Contact Nicorex Alloys for a quotation.
Why is ER2209 Wire Over-Alloyed with 2-3% more Nickel than 2205 Base Metal?
Rapid cooling through the ferrite stability range (1200-800°C) favours ferrite over austenite. Without an extra nickel, the deposit solidifies with >70% ferrite, causing poor toughness and reduced corrosion resistance. The over-match targets 30-50% ferrite as-welded.
Why is Nitrogen-Containing back purge gas required when TIG Welding Duplex with ER2209?
During TIG root pass welding, nitrogen is lost to the arc and root-side atmosphere. Pure argon back purge causes nitrogen depletion and excess ferrite (>80%), with severe loss of pitting resistance. Adding 2-5% nitrogen to the argon back purge compensates for this loss.
What Heat Input Range is correct for Welding Duplex 2205 with ER2209?
Use a heat input range of 0.5 to 2.5 kJ per mm of weld length (about 12 to 63 kJ per inch). Below 0.5 kJ/mm, rapid cooling produces excessive ferrite. Above 2.5 kJ/mm, sigma and chi phase precipitation occurs in the 600-900°C range.
Can ER2209 be used to Weld Super Duplex 2507?
No. ER2209 has insufficient Cr (22% vs 25%), Mo (3% vs 4%), and N (0.17% vs 0.27%) to achieve PREN >40.
What are the F-Number and A-Number for ER2209 per ASME Section IX?
The F-Number and A-Nmber for ER2209 per ASME Section IX is F-6 and A-8 (SFA-5.9).
What Ferrite Content should the ER2209 Weld Deposit have?
When should ER2209 not be used?
Avoid ER2209 for super duplex (2507) welding; for continuous service above 280°C; for applications prohibiting ferrite; for root welds with pure argon back purge; and for heat input outside 0.5-2.5 kJ/mm.
