AWS Classification Explained: What Does ER410NiMo Mean?
Referring to the following table will help to understand how ER and NiMo specifications influence the microstructure and toughness of weld deposits.
| Component |
Meaning & Specification |
Key Benefit |
| ER |
Electrode/Rod: Bare solid wire per AWS A5. 9. |
Identifies the filler for GMAW (MIG) or GTAW (TIG) processes. |
| NiMo |
4.0-5.0% Ni and 0.4-0.7% Mo modification. |
Suppresses delta-ferrite to create a tough, soft martensitic microstructure. |
| 410 |
11.5-13.5% Cr (Chromium) straight martensitic grade. |
Provides high hardness and corrosion resistance; ideal for surfacing and steam turbine parts. |

Nickel at 4-5% separates ER410NiMo from ER410 (0.60% Ni max), suppressing delta-ferrite and stabilising retained austenite for sub-zero toughness. Molybdenum at 0.4-0.7% adds pitting resistance in chloride-bearing water and sulfide SCC resistance.
All-Weld-Metal Mechanical Properties of ER410NiMo
The following table provides the mechanical property specifications for ER410NiMo all-weld metal after post-weld heat treatment.

Industrial Welding Applications of ER410NiMo TIG & MIG Wire
The following are industrial applications of ER410NiMo
Storage and Handling of ER410NiMo Welding Filler Wire
ER410NiMo is a solid bare wire, so it does not absorb moisture. The soft martensitic deposit is susceptible to hydrogen cold cracking. Store in original sealed packaging at 15-30°C, below 60% RH. Keep it separated from carbon steel tooling. Degrease the base metal with acetone within 25 mm of the joint. For turbine repairs in humid environments, extra moisture control is critical.
