Schedule Application Guide
| Schedule | Typical Use |
|---|---|
| 5S | Low-pressure utility, instrument air, and drains |
| 10S | Low-medium pressure, most common for stainless/Ni alloy process piping |
| 40S | Standard pressure, general process service |
| 80S | High pressure, thicker wall for threading capability |
| 160 | Very high pressure, critical service |
| XXS | Extreme pressure, restricted bore |
Types of Fittings
| Connection Type | Standard | Size Range | Pressure Class | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buttweld (BW) | ASME B16.9 | ½” to 24” | Per pipe schedule | Process piping (>2”) |
| Socket Weld (SW) | ASME B16.11 | ⅛” to 4” | 3000#, 6000#, 9000# | Small bore (≤2”) |
| Threaded (THD) | ASME B16.11 | ⅛” to 4” | 2000#, 3000#, 6000# | Low pressure, non-critical |
90° Elbow
The 90° elbow changes pipe direction by a full right angle. Long Radius (LR) with a centreline radius of 1.5× NPS is the default. Short Radius (SR) at 1× NPS fits tight layouts.
45° Elbow
A 45° elbow provides a gradual direction change with less flow resistance. Two can replace one 90° elbow where space allows.
Reducing Tee
Reducing tees have a smaller branch opening, designated Run × Run × Branch (e.g., 4” × 4” × 2”). They replace a tee-plus-reducer on the branch.
Concentric Reducer
This fitting tapers from a larger NPS to a smaller one while keeping the centreline aligned. It is standard on vertical pipe runs.
Eccentric Reducer
Eccentric reducers maintain one flat side: Flat-on-Bottom (FOB) prevents liquid accumulation in horizontal runs, while Flat-on-Top (FOT) avoids air pockets at pump suction.
End Cap
An end cap closes a pipe run with a dished or flat profile for dead ends, pressure testing, and future expansion.
Stub End
The stub end is butt-welded to pipe and paired with a lap joint flange for bolt hole alignment. Long pattern per ASME B16.9; short per MSS SP-43.
180° Return Bend
Return bends reverse flow by 180° in a single U-shaped fitting, used in heat exchanger headers and coil systems.
| Fitting | BW | SW | THD | Main Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90° Elbow (LR) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Direction change |
| 45° Elbow | Yes | Yes | Yes | Gradual direction change |
| Equal Tee | Yes | Yes | Yes | Branch off the same size |

| End Cap | Yes | — | Yes | Pipe termination |
| Stub End | Yes | — | — | Lap joint flange connection |
| Coupling | — | Yes | Yes | Join two pipes |
| Union | — | Yes | Yes | Disconnect-friendly joint |

Matching fitting grade to pipe grade is critical; mixed grades risk galvanic corrosion.
Types of Pipes

Seamless Pipe
Seamless pipe is produced by piercing a solid billet with no weld seam. Most often for sour service under NACE MR0175 and cyclic fatigue applications.

Welded Pipe (ERW)
ERW pipe is formed from strip coil and seam-welded without filler metal. Every seam is 100% ECT or UT tested.

EFW Pipe
EFW pipe uses filler metal during joining. It is the standard method above NPS 16” where seamless production isn't feasible.
Industrial Applications of Pipes & Fittings
- Chemical & Petrochemical: Acid transfer lines, reactor feed piping, and scrubber circuits are the primary applications.
- Oil & Gas (Offshore, Subsea, Sour Service): Inconel 625 is the standard for subsea flowlines. Super Duplex S32750 handles seawater, and Duplex 2205 covers sour gas gathering.
- Power Generation: Superheater, reheater, and condenser tubing, furnace service, and seawater condensers.
- Pulp & Paper: ClO₂ bleach plant piping runs in harsh chloride‑acid conditions.
- Pharmaceutical & Food Processing: CIP piping and WFI loops require electropolished tubes with Ra ≤ 0.4 µm surface roughness for cleanroom service.
- Desalination & Water Treatment: Seawater intake, brine reject, and RO high-pressure piping.
- Marine & Shipbuilding: Seawater cooling, bilge piping, fire main, and exhaust systems are common shipboard applications.
