ER2319 Aluminium Welding Wire — TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified stockist and supplier of ER2319 aluminium welding wire based in Mumbai, India. We provide these wires classified under AWS A5.10 / ASME SFA-5.10

ER2319 is an aluminium-copper filler metal, carrying UNS A92319 and the EN ISO 18273 designation S Al 2319 (AlCu6MnZrTi). The wire contains 5.8–6.8% copper as its primary strengthening element, supported by vanadium (0.05–0.15%), zirconium (0.10–0.25%), and titanium (0.10–0.20%) micro-alloying additions that refine grain structure and resist hot cracking. In the as-welded condition, tensile strength reaches approximately 248 MPa (36 ksi); after T6 heat treatment, it rises to 358 MPa (52 ksi), and T87 processing pushes it to 393 MPa (57 ksi), the peak mechanical strength of any standard aluminium weld deposit. ER2319 is the matching filler for 2219 and 2014 wrought alloys (P-22 group), and is supplied as TIG rods in 1.6, 2.4, and 3.2 mm diameters and MIG wire in 1.2 and 1.6 mm. Welding runs on AC or DCEP for GTAW and DCEP for GMAW, shielded by 100% argon or argon-helium blends.

ER2319 is mainly applied in aerospace structures, space launch vehicles, cryogenic tanks, defence hardware, and high‑performance automotive components. As a speciality aerospace‑grade filler produced in relatively low volumes, it is supplied with Mill Test Certificates (MTC 3.1) and full traceability documentation.

AWS Classification Explained: What Does ER2319 Mean?

The table below explains the AWS ER2319 designation, breaking down each element to clarify its meaning and alloy classification in welding applications.
Designation Meaning
ER Electrode/Rod denotes a bare filler metal suitable for GTAW or GMAW processes
23 Identifies the 2XXX aluminium series (Al-Cu alloys)
19 Specifies the alloy composition (approx. 5.8–6.8% Cu with V, Zr, Ti additions)
The 2XXX aluminium series uniquely produces heat-treatable weld deposits. ER2319 is primarily used as a matching filler for 2219 alloy. Micro-alloying elements like vanadium, zirconium, and titanium form dispersoids that refine grain structure and significantly reduce hot cracking susceptibility.

Chemical Composition of ER2319 per AWS A5.10

The chemical composition of ER2319 aluminium welding wire, along with its proportion in percentage, is listed below:
Specification Silicon (Si) Iron (Fe) Copper (Cu) Manganese (Mn) Magnesium (Mg) Zinc (Zn) Titanium (Ti) Vanadium (V) Zirconium (Zr) Beryllium (Be) Aluminium (Al)
AWS A5.10 Req. (%) 0.20 max 0.30 max 5.8–6.8 0.20–0.40 0.02 max 0.10 max 0.10–0.20 0.05–0.15 0.10–0.25 0.0003 max Remainder
Copper at 6.3% nominal forms Al₂Cu theta-prime precipitates during ageing that drive high post-weld strength. V and Zr create dispersoids that pin grain boundaries. Ti refines the solidification grain structure. Magnesium is held to 0.02% max to prevent Mg-Cu interactions that cause hot cracking.

Mechanical Properties of ER2319 Weld Deposits

The mechanical properties of the ER2319 weld deposit, including tensile strength and yield strength, are listed below:
Condition Tensile Strength Yield Strength
As-Welded ~248 MPa (36 ksi) ~165 MPa (24 ksi)
T6 (solution + age) ~358 MPa (52 ksi) ~276 MPa (40 ksi)
T87 (cold work + age) ~393 MPa (57 ksi) ~324 MPa (47 ksi)
Elongation runs approximately 5–6% across all three conditions. T87 produces the highest strength of any standard aluminium weld deposit; a capability unique to ER2319 among commonly used aluminium fillers. ER4043, ER5356, and ER5183 are all non-heat-treatable.

Base Metal Compatibility for ER2319

The base metal and its compatibility, along with the grade and ASME number, are listed in the table below:
Base Metal Grade ASME No. Notes
Aluminium 2219 P-22 Primary base metal for ER2319
Aluminium 2014 P-22 Commonly welded with ER2319
Aluminium 2024 P-22 Suitable for 2XXX-to-2XXX dissimilar joints
ER2319 (F-24, SFA-5.10) is intended for Al-Cu alloys but should not be used on 5XXX series due to cracking risk. It is unsuitable for marine exposure and unnecessary for general fabrication, where ER4043 or ER5356 are adequate.

Welding Parameters for ER2319

Recommended welding parameters for ER2319 across GTAW and GMAW are listed in the table below.
Process / Diameter Current Range (A) Polarity / Gas
GTAW – 1.6 mm 60–110 AC or DCEP / 100% Ar
GTAW – 2.4 mm 100–180 AC or DCEP / Ar or Ar/He
GTAW – 3.2 mm 150–250 AC or DCEP / Ar or Ar/He
GMAW – 1.2 mm 120–220 DCEP / Ar or Ar/He
GMAW – 1.6 mm 180–300 DCEP / Ar or Ar/He
Preheat 120–175°C for thick sections. Maximum interpass temperature is 175°C. ER2319 is more crack-sensitive than ER4043 or ER5356, so joint preparation, oxide removal, and low-hydrogen practice are critical.

Industrial Applications of ER2319

ER2319 aluminium welding wire offers high-strength, heat-treatable welds with excellent crack resistance, ideal for demanding structural fabrication projects.
Industrial Applications

Storage and Handling of ER2319

ER2319 contains 6.3% Cu, making it sensitive to galvanic corrosion if contaminated with dissimilar metals. Store separately from Al-Mg (5XXX) fillers. Keep the wire in sealed packaging in a dry environment and degrease before use. Low-hydrogen practice is required due to crack sensitivity. Shelf life is indefinite in sealed packaging.

Available Forms and Packaging of ER2319

Nicorex Alloys stocks ER2319 in the following forms, diameters and packaging configurations.
Form Diameter Packaging
TIG Rod 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 mm 2.5 / 5 kg tubes, 1000 mm length

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of ER2319 Welding Wire per kg in India?
ER2319 is a speciality aerospace filler priced higher than ER4043 or ER5356 due to copper content, V/Zr micro-alloying, and lower production volumes. Contact Nicorex Alloys with project details for a quotation.
Yes, this is the defining capability of ER2319. Solution heat treat at ~535°C, water quench, and age at ~175°C to reach T6 with ~358 MPa (52 ksi). For T87, add cold working before ageing to reach ~393 MPa (57 ksi). No other standard aluminium filler offers this.
The External Tank held liquid hydrogen at –253°C and liquid oxygen at –183°C. Alloy 2219-T87 was selected for cryogenic toughness and high strength-to-weight ratio. ER2319 was the only filler that could match the base metal, accept post-weld heat treatment, and maintain toughness at those temperatures.
The F-number for ER2319 is F-24 as per ASME Section IX, QW-432, with specification ASME SFA-5.10 and no A-Number assigned.
Avoid ER2319 for 5XXX series alloys (Cu + Mg causes cracking and galvanic corrosion), marine service (Cu reduces seawater resistance), general fabrication where ER4043 or ER5356 is adequate, assemblies that skip post-weld heat treatment when strength is needed (as-welded is only 248 MPa), and 7XXX series alloys.
