- Stainless Steel Coated Electrodes
Stainless steel welding electrodes are coated consumables that join stainless steel grades. They deposit weld metal that resists corrosion, heat, and chemical attack. Each AWS class matches a specific base metal family.
Key traits include oxidation resistance in high-heat zones and pitting resistance in chloride or marine settings. Low-carbon types like E308L and E316L reduce carbide buildup at grain boundaries. Stabilised grades such as E347 add niobium to lock carbon in place during heat cycles.
Engineers pick stainless steel electrodes when joints must hold strength in harsh service. Dissimilar joints between carbon steel and stainless steel need over-alloyed grades like E309L to handle dilution. Common uses include pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, petrochemical plants, and offshore platforms.
Nicorex Alloys stocks and supplies these grades from our Mumbai warehouse. We serve fabricators, EPC contractors, and maintenance teams across India as a supplier and stockist.
Common Types of Stainless Steel Electrodes
| Product Grade | Best Metals They Can Weld | Reason |
|---|---|---|
|
AWS CLASS E308L/308H-16 COATED ELECTRODES
|
AISI 304, 304L, 304H austenitic stainless steel | Chemistry matches the 18Cr-8Ni base for strong, corrosion-resistant joints |
|
AWS CLASS E309L/309H-16 WELDING ELECTRODE
|
Dissimilar joints: stainless steel to carbon steel | Higher Cr-Ni levels prevent dilution cracking at the fusion line |
|
AWS CLASS E316L/316H-16 COATED ELECTRODES
|
AISI 316, 316L, 316H Mo-bearing stainless steel | Molybdenum matches base metal and resists chloride pitting |
|
AWS CLASS E347-16 WELDING ELECTRODES
|
AISI 321, 347 stabilised austenitic stainless steel | Niobium prevents intergranular corrosion in high-heat service |
Quick Selection Guide
| Base Metal Being Welded | Recommended Electrode | AWS Class | Why This Choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 304 / 304L Stainless Steel | E308L-16 Coated Electrodes | E308L-16 | Direct chemistry match for best corrosion resistance |
| Carbon Steel to Stainless Steel (Dissimilar) | E309L-16 Welding Electrode | E309L-16 | Over-alloyed deposit offsets carbon steel dilution |
| AISI 316 / 316L Stainless Steel | E316L-16 Coated Electrodes | E316L-16 | Molybdenum content matches base metal pitting resistance |
| AISI 321 / 347 Stabilised Grades | E347-16 Welding Electrodes | E347-16 | Niobium prevents sensitisation after welding |
| AISI 310 Heat-Resistant Steel | E310-16 Welding Electrodes | E310-16 | High Cr-Ni deposit withstands oxidation above 1000°C |
| AISI 410 Martensitic Stainless Steel | E410-16 Welding Electrodes | E410-16 | 12% chromium deposit keeps hardness and wear resistance |
