The welding electrode with an INCONEL 182 coating is a nickel-chromium-iron flux-coated consumable that is classified as ENiCrFe-3 by AWS A5.11 / ASME SFA 5.11 (UNS W86182, ASME IX F-43, ISO ENi6182, DIN EL-NiCr15FeMn). It is the preferred SMAW electrode for welding Inconel 600, Inconel 601, and 690 alloys to themselves and for dissimilar joints between nickel alloys and steels. In SMAW practice, welders refer to this as an Alloy 182 stick electrode for manual arc welding in all positions. This filler electrode produces a pure austenitic weld deposit with excellent oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength. High manganese content (5-9.5%) acts as a deoxidiser and austenite stabiliser, reducing micro-fissuring susceptibility and making it one of the most crack-resistant nickel alloy SMAW consumables available. ENiCrFe-3 is the nuclear industry standard for dissimilar weld joints between reactor vessel nozzles (SA-508 steel) and primary piping. It is suitable for service from cryogenic temperatures up to 900°F (480°C).

Nicorex Alloys supplies AWS A5.11 ENiCrFe-3 (INCONEL 182/Haynes 182) SMAW electrodes in multiple diameters, offering high-strength, crack-resistant, austenitic weld deposits for dissimilar joints from cryogenic to 900°F in nuclear, chemical, petrochemical, power, desalination, offshore and maintenance applications.

Industries & Applications of ENiCrFe-3 (INCONEL 182) Welding Electrode

Exceptional pitting resistance and dissimilar metal weldability make the ENiCrMo-3 welding electrode a preferred consumable for these SMAW applications:
Industrial Applications
These ENiCrFe-3 welding electrodes operate from cryogenic temperatures up to 900°F (480°C). On the shop floor, welders call this the ‘182 rod’ or ‘Inconel stick electrode’.

Storage & Handling of ENiCrFe-3 Coated Electrodes

ENiCrFe-3 electrodes use a low-hydrogen mineral-based flux coating sensitive to moisture. Improper storage causes porosity and hydrogen-induced cracking.
  1. Unopened containers: Store sealed in the original hermetically sealed moisture-proof canister. Keep in dry storage at 50–90°F (10–32°C) with humidity below 50%. Shelf life is indefinite when sealed containers remain undamaged.
  2. After opening the canister, transfer all electrodes to an electrode storage oven. Maintain oven at 250-400°F (121-204°C) per Haynes International recommendation.
  3. Electrode issue to welder: Issue only the quantity needed for one shift. Welders should use a heated quiver at 70-130°C (160-265°F).
  4. Atmospheric exposure limits: Max 4 hours before reconditioning is required.
  5. If exposed to moisture: Heat in furnace at 600-700°F (316-371°C) for 2-3 hours (per Haynes International).
  6. Pre-heat cold/damp electrodes at 200-250°F for 30-60 min first to prevent coating cracks.
  7. Maximum 3 reconditioning cycles. Discard if coating becomes brittle or flakes.
Moisture in the flux coating decomposes during welding and releases hydrogen into the weld pool. In nickel alloy welds, even small amounts of hydrogen can cause subsurface porosity and hot cracking. Proper storage is especially critical for nuclear (ASME Section III) and NACE MR0175 applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ENiCrFe-3 Welding Electrode used for?
SMAW welding of Inconel 600, 601, 690, Incoloy 800/800H, Nickel 200/201, and dissimilar joints between nickel alloys and steels. Also for surfacing with Ni-Cr-Fe weld metal. Service: cryogenic to 900°F (480°C). Primary industry: nuclear dissimilar weld joints.
DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive / reverse polarity). Provides deeper penetration and better arc stability with flux-coated nickel alloy electrodes.

DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive / reverse polarity). DCEP provides deeper penetration and better arc stability with flux-coated nickel alloy electrodes.

High manganese acts as an austenite stabiliser and deoxidiser that reduces micro-fissuring (hot cracking). Trade-off: high Mn limits creep strength, capping service at 900°F (480°C). For higher temperatures, use ENiCrMo-3 (Inconel 112).

It produces a pure austenitic weld deposit with no ferrite phase. Ferrite causes sigma-phase embrittlement under long-term thermal exposure. High crack resistance and compatibility with SA-508 steel and Inconel 600 make it ideal for reactor vessel nozzle-to-safe-end joints. ASME Section III qualified (F-43).

ENiCrFe-3 (Inconel 182) has high Mn (5-9.5%) for crack resistance, max 900°F. ENiCrFe-2 (Incoweld A) has lower Mn (~3%) with better creep above 900°F. Choose ENiCrFe-3 for crack resistance. Choose ENiCrFe-2 for high-temperature creep service.
ENiCrFe-3 targets Ni-Cr-Fe alloys (Inconel 600, 601, 690), which contain minimal Mo. Adding Mo creates compositional mismatch and segregation. For pitting resistance in chloride/reducing acids, use ENiCrMo-3 (Inconel 112) with 8-10% Mo.

Yes, but the preferred filler for 690-to-690 joints is ERNiCrFe-7A (FM52/FM52M) for better PWSCC resistance. ENiCrFe-3 remains acceptable for 690 dissimilar joints and repair welding.

Yes. Common for 2.25Cr-1Mo and 9Cr-1Mo to 304/316/321 stainless joints. The nickel-base deposit prevents carbon migration, avoids sigma-phase embrittlement, and handles differential thermal expansion better than E309 fillers.
