The controlled titanium addition (1.0–4.0%) defines ENi-1 metallurgy. Titanium reacts with carbon in the molten weld metal to form stable titanium carbides (TiC), preventing free carbon from precipitating as graphite at grain boundaries. Without this carbon scavenging, graphitisation causes severe embrittlement and intergranular cracking in pure nickel welds. The 97%+ Ni content gives the deposit outstanding resistance to hot concentrated caustic alkalis (NaOH, KOH).

Pure nickel weld deposits from ENi-1 are soft and ductile. The 97%+ Ni produces a single-phase FCC austenitic microstructure with no hardening phases. ENi-1 deposits are readily machinable, which is critical for overlay cladding where the welded surface must be machined to final dimensions.
Base Metal Compatibility & P-Number Matrix for ENi-1
ENi-1 electrodes are qualified to join the following base metals. The primary application is welding commercially pure nickel (ASME P-41) to itself and to dissimilar metals.

The nearly pure nickel deposit accommodates dilution from iron-base metals without forming brittle intermetallic phases. For nickel-clad steel, ENi-1 welds the clad side while carbon steel electrodes (E7018) weld the backing steel. Do not use E7018 on the nickel-clad layer; iron dilution destroys corrosion resistance.
Welding Parameters & Procedure Guidance for ENi-1
Controlled heat input and stringer bead technique are mandatory when welding with ENi-1 to prevent porosity and hot cracking in the pure nickel weld deposit.

Polarity is DCEP only. No preheat is needed for Nickel 200/201; for dissimilar joints to carbon steel, preheat the steel side to 10–40°C above the dew point. Maximum interpass temperature is 150°C (300°F). Target heat input at 1.0–2.0 kJ/mm. Use stringer beads only with no weave wider than 3× electrode diameter. Keep a short arc length with a slight drag angle (5–10°). Clean each bead thoroughly; nickel weld slag is tenacious and must be fully removed.
Sulfur contamination is the single greatest risk to ENi-1 weld integrity. Trace sulfur from cutting fluids, marking paints, or grease causes catastrophic hot cracking. Use mechanical cleaning with nickel-dedicated stainless steel tools only. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required. Do not stress-relieve Nickel 200 above 315°C (600°F) due to graphitisation risk.

Critical-Service Welding Applications of ENi-1 Electrode
ENi-1 serves industries where pure nickel base metals handle aggressive caustic, sulfide, and organic acid environments. Five major application areas rely on this welding rod for fabrication and repair.
Storage, Handling & Re-Drying of ENi-1 Electrodes
Store ENi-1 in original sealed packaging under clean, dry conditions at least 5°C above the dew point with relative humidity below 50%. Nicorex Alloys supplies ENi-1 in hermetically sealed canisters, so no re-drying is needed for first use if the packaging is intact.
For moisture-exposed electrodes, re-dry at 300–350°C (570–660°F) for 60 minutes. After opening, hold at 100–150°C (212–300°F). Maximum exposure outside the oven is 4 hours. Re-dry a maximum of 3 times. Handle with clean, lint-free gloves using nickel-dedicated tools only. Carbon steel contamination, sulfur, lead, and zinc are catastrophic for pure nickel welds.
