AWS Classification Explained: What Does ERTi-2 Mean?
This table explains the AWS classification ERTi-2.
| Component |
Identifier |
Meaning |
| ER |
Electrode / Rod |
Indicates the wire can be used as a continuous Electrode (GMAW/MIG) or a cutoff Rod (GTAW/TIG). |
| Ti |
Titanium |
Identifies Titanium as the primary base element of the alloy. |
| 2 |
Grade 2 |
Specifies the chemical purity level. Grade 2 is “Commercially Pure” (CP) and is the most widely used titanium grade. |
ERTi-2 is widely used because its 345 MPa strength meets almost all CP titanium pressure code requirements, and its controlled oxygen level keeps the weld flexible for orbital and thin-wall tube welding.
Chemical Composition of ERTi-2 Wire per AWS A5.16
This table presents chemical composition limits of ERTi-2 wire per AWS A5.16, it includes interstitial elements and titanium balance requirements.

Oxygen is tightly controlled between 0.08-0.16%. The low end ensures enough weld strength, and the high end avoids loss of ductility. The Fe limit (0.12% max) is lower than in the Grade 2 plate (0.30%), so the weld metal stays cleaner than the base metal.
All-Weld-Metal Mechanical Properties of ERTi-2 TIG Welding Rod
This table summarises all-weld-metal mechanical properties of ERTi-2, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness per AWS A5.16 standards.
| Specification |

Yield Strength (0.2%) |
Elongation |
Hardness |
| AWS A5.16 Minimum |

| Typical |
380–420 MPa |
~275 MPa (40 ksi) |
~20% |
~160–200 HV |
ERTi-2 weld strength (345 MPa) matches Grade 2 titanium, so it’s a true matching filler. Any air contamination makes the weld hard and brittle, so pure shielding gas is essential.

| Grade 12 (Ti-Mo-Ni) |
R53400 |
P-52 |
ERTi-12 preferred for matching corrosion |

Industrial Welding Applications of ERTi-2 (Titanium Grade 2) Filler Wire
ERTi-2 is specified wherever CP titanium fabrication requires code compliance and corrosion resistance at competitive cost.
Storage and Handling of ERTi-2 Titanium Welding Wire
Store the wire in its original sealed packaging and reseal with desiccant after each use. Keep it in a clean, dry, climate-controlled area at 15–30°C with humidity below 60%. Store it away from ferrous materials and metals like copper, cadmium, zinc, and lead, and keep it out of carbon steel work areas. Before welding, clean the wire with acetone and handle it only with clean gloves. Use dedicated stainless steel brushes for titanium. Unopened TIG rods and MIG spools have an indefinite shelf life, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates must show full interstitial analysis.
