ER80S-B2 TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified stockist and supplier of ER80S-B2 chrome-moly welding wire in Mumbai, India. We maintain a supply of this welding wire according to AWS A5.28 / ASME SFA-5.28 specifications to ensure consistent product quality.

ER80S-B2 is a 1.25Cr-0.5Mo low-alloy steel solid wire suitable for GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG) and SAW processes. The chromium content at 1.20-1.50% provides high temperature strength, while molybdenum at 0.40-0.65% delivers creep strength and resistance to hydrogen attack. Together, this 1.25Cr-0.5Mo chemistry serves reliably at temperatures up to 540°C (1000°F) in steam, hydrogen and hydrocarbon service. ER80S-B2 is a standard filler wire for P-4 group steels, such as SA-335 P11 pipes, SA-213 T11 superheater tubes, SA-182 F11 fittings, and SA-217 WC6 castings. After welding, the joint must be post-weld heat-treated (PWHT) at 620–680°C. Then the weld metal reaches at least 550 MPa (80 ksi) tensile strength with 19% elongation.

ER80S-B2 is available as TIG rods (1.6 to 3.2 mm, 5 kg tubes), MIG spools (0.8 to 1.2 mm, D200/D300), and SAW wire (2.4 to 4.0 mm, 25 kg coils). We also supply the matching SMAW electrode E8018-B2 (AWS A5.5) and FCAW wire E8XT1-B2, giving projects full WPS continuity across all welding processes. Every lot ships with EN 10204/3.1 mill test certificates and PMI verification.

AWS Classification Explained: What Does ER80S-B2 Mean?

Each character of the ER80S-B2 designation carries a specific meaning according to AWS A5.28.
Designator Meaning
ER Electrode/Rod (solid wire)
80 80 ksi (550 MPa) minimum tensile after PWHT
S Solid wire
B2 1.25Cr-0.5Mo alloy composition (P-4 base metals)
In AWS A5.28, the letter B shows the chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) level. B2 means a 1.25% Cr, 0.5% Mo alloy for P-4 steels, while B3 means a 2.25% Cr, 1.0% Mo alloy.

Chemical Composition of ER80S-B2 Weld Deposit (%)

The table presents the typical chemical composition of ER80S-B2 weld deposits, showing element ranges and actual values according to AWS A5.28 specifications.

Specification Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Chromium (Cr) Molybdenum (Mo) Nickel (Ni) Phosphorus (P) Sulfur (S) Copper (Cu)
AWS A5.28 Range (%) 0.07–0.12 0.40–0.70 0.40–0.70 1.20–1.50 0.40–0.65 0.20 max 0.025 max 0.025 max 0.35 max
Typical (%) 0.09 0.55 0.48 1.35 0.55 0.10 0.012 0.006 0.15
Chromium (1.20-1.50%) helps the weld resist rust and stay strong even under high temperatures. Molybdenum (0.40-0.65%) improves creep resistance and reduces brittleness. Together, this 1.25Cr-0.5Mo composition gives reliable performance up to about 540°C in steam, hydrogen, and hydrocarbon service.

Dissimilar Metal Joining:

Joint Configuration Recommended Filler Critical Notes
P-4 to P-3 (C-0.5Mo) ER80S-B2 Use a higher-alloy filler to match the P-4 side.
P-4 to P-1 (Carbon Steel) ER80S-B2 Use careful preheat; PWHT per P-4 requirements.
P-4 to P-5A/5B (2.25Cr / 5Cr) ER90S-B3 or ER80S-B6 Match the higher-alloy side; Do not use ER80S-B2.
P-4 to P-8 (Austenitic SS) ERNiCr-3 or ER309L Use Ni-base or Stainless filler; Do not use B2 fillers.
ER80S-B2 is classified in ASME Section IX as F-6 for low-alloy steel bare wire/rod (SFA-5.28). Its A-number is 3, which means it fits the chromium range of 0.40-2.00% and the molybdenum range of 0.40-0.65%. ER80S-B2 falls inside this range, so it is A-3. Do not mix it up with A-2 or A-4, which are for steels with lower or higher chromium and molybdenum levels.

Industrial Applications

Storage and Handling of ER80S-B2 Filler Rod

Store TIG rods and MIG spools in a clean, dry place, away from moisture. Keep all filler metals in their original packaging so they stay protected from dust, oil, and other contaminants. Do not place them directly on the floor; use clean racks or shelves instead.

When handling TIG rods, clean gloves should always be used to prevent contamination. After welding, any partially used MIG wire spools should be returned to their protective packaging. If any rods are exposed to moisture, re-bake them at 120°C for 1 hour before welding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PWHT mandatory for all ER80S-B2 welds?
Yes. PWHT at 620-680°C (1150-1250°F) is mandatory. As-welded metal is very hard (over 300 HV), brittle, and prone to hydrogen cracking. PWHT softens the weld to below 225 HV and restores toughness and ductility.
ER80S-B2 is a 1.25Cr-0.5Mo wire for P-4 steels, used up to about 540°C. ER90S-B3 is 2.25Cr-1Mo for P-5A steels, used up to about 595°C. ER90S-B3 has better high-temperature creep and hydrogen resistance.
Use a minimum preheat of 150°C (300°F). Keep interpass temperature between 150°C and 300°C. For sections thicker than 25 mm or highly restrained joints, increase preheat to at least 200°C.
ER80S-B2 is suitable for all ASME P-4 steels, including P11/P12/P2 pipes, T11/T12/T2 tubes, F11/F12/F2 fittings, WC6 castings, SA-387 Gr.11/12/2 plates and SA-369 FP11/FP12/FP2 forged pipes.
We supply TIG rods in 1000 mm, 5 kg tubes; MIG wire on D200 (12.5 kg) and D300 (15 kg) spools; and SAW wire in 25 kg coils.
Do not use ER80S-B2 for 2.25Cr-1Mo, 5Cr, 9Cr, or P91 steels. Always use proper preheat, PWHT, and keep service temperature at or below 540°C.
