Alloy 686 welding wire is a nickel‑based alloy containing about 57% Ni, 21% Cr, 16% Mo and 4% W. The tungsten addition makes it different from other NiCrMo fillers. It combines the high chromium levels of C‑22 and Alloy 59 with the strong reducing‑acid resistance of C‑276 in a single weld deposit. Low carbon (max 0.01%) and silicon (max 0.08%) help prevent carbide and silicide buildup at grain boundaries, improving corrosion resistance. In waste‑to‑energy plants, ERNiCrMo‑14 (INCO‑WELD 686CPT) provides much better life due to its very high combined Cr+Mo+W content. ERNiCrMo‑14 is also identified as UNS N06686, ASME SFA 5.14, EN ISO 18274 S Ni 6686, and Werkstoff number 2.4606. TIG rods are available in 0.9-3.2 mm diameters and MIG wire in 0.8-1.6 mm. The weld metal typically reaches 758 MPa (110 ksi) tensile strength with about 35% elongation, giving a strong, ductile joint.

This Inconel 686 filler is used in harsh, corrosion-prone environments such as waste-to-energy incineration, flue gas desulphurisation systems, chemical plants, pulp and paper mills, oil and gas production and pharmaceutical equipment. Every consignment from Nicorex Alloys is supplied with a Mill Test Certificate 3.1 to EN 10204, ensuring full heat and lot traceability.

ERNiCrMo-14 is mainly used in harsh environments where standard NiCrMo filler metals fail under mixed oxidising, reducing and chloride attack.
Industrial Applications

Storage and Handling of ERNiCrMo-14 Welding Filler Wire

ERNiCrMo-14 is a solid bare wire, preventing moisture absorption. The main quality risk is surface contamination, which is critical for this ultra-low C/Si alloy.
  1. Store in original sealed packaging in a clean, dry environment. Temperature 15-30 0C, humidity below 60% RH.
  2. Keep wire away from carbon steel tools, machining oils, cutting fluids, paint, galvanised materials, copper tooling, lead-containing compounds and sulphur-bearing shop chemicals.
  3. Handle with clean, lint-free gloves and only use stainless steel or nickel-alloy tools, never carbon steel brushes or clamps.
  4. Store TIG rods in sealed tubes. After opening, keep them clean, and put unused rods back in the tube. Keep off the floor.
  5. Protect MIG spools from dust and airborne contamination, and always cover the spool on the wire feeder when not welding.
  6. Before welding: degrease base metal and filler surfaces with acetone or MEK. Remove all oxide, paint, marker and foreign material within 25mm of the joint.
  7. For ENiCrMo-14 SMAW electrodes (AWS A5.11), store them in heated rod ovens at 120-200°C after opening the sealed cans.

What makes ERNiCrMo-14 different from ERNiCrMo-4 (Hastelloy C-276) welding wire?
ERNiCrMo-14 contains about 21% Cr, compared to 16% Cr in ERNiCrMo-4, while both have around 16% Mo and 4% W. The extra chromium gives ERNiCrMo-14 better resistance in oxidising and chloride-contaminated environments. ERNiCrMo-4 (C-276) is better at purely reducing acids, but 14 is preferred in mixed oxidising/reducing with chlorides.
Waste incineration flue gas condensates contain an aggressive mix of acids and chlorides at 300-500°C. They attack metals in both oxidising and reducing mechanisms.
Don’t use ERNiCrMo-14 if ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625) or ERNiCrMo-4 (C-276) already provides enough corrosion resistance. Avoid service above 650°C due to mu/sigma phases. Do not use CO2 shielding gas, as it causes oxidation and chromium loss.
