Niobium is the defining addition. It provides precipitation strengthening that gives the highest minimum tensile strength (758 MPa / 110 ksi) of any standard NiCrMo filler, while also preventing hot cracking in restrained dissimilar metal joints. Inconel 625 filler metal provides exceptional performance in a broad range of temperatures from -196°C LNG carrier cargo tanks to as high as 600°C in chemical reactor vessels. No other single classification in AWS A5.14 matches this range. Use the stringer bead technique only. The NiCrMo weld pool is sluggish with poor wetting. Keep arc length short to avoid porosity. Nickel alloys are sensitive to S, P, Pb, and Zn contamination. Degrease with acetone or MEK within 25 mm of the joint. Pure CO₂ must never be used as shielding gas for nickel alloy GMAW. For 9% nickel steel (LNG), restrict interpass to 100°C max, use stringer beads only, and apply no preheat.

Storage and Handling of ERNiCrMo 3 Filler Wire

ERNiCrMo-3 is a solid bare wire. Moisture absorption is not a concern. Surface contamination is the primary quality risk. Store in original sealed packaging at 15–30°C and below 60% RH. Keep wire away from carbon steel tools, machining oils, galvanised materials, and sulphur-bearing chemicals. Handle with clean gloves and use stainless-steel-dedicated tooling only. Before welding, degrease base metal and filler surfaces with acetone or MEK within 25 mm of the joint.

Niobium in ERNiCrMo-3 gives higher tensile strength (min 758 vs. 690 MPa) and superior hot-cracking resistance in dissimilar joints. ERNiCrMo-4 provides better resistance in purely reducing acid environments.

Do not use ERNiCrMo-3 for high-temperature creep service above 600°C. It is not suited for purely reducing acid environments where ERNiCrMo-4 outperforms. Do not use it for Monel 400, where matching NiCu chemistry is required.
