Alloy 925 (UNS N09925) is an age-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium alloy containing Ni 42-46%, Cr 19.5-22.5%, Fe 22% min, Mo 2.5-3.5%, Cu 1.5-3.0%, Ti 1.9-2.4%, and Al 0.1-0.5%. It combines the corrosion resistance of Alloy 825 with precipitation-hardening capability through γ′ Ni₃ (Al, Ti) precipitates, the same strengthening family as Inconel 718 and Monel K-500. In the solution-annealed and aged condition, Incoloy 925 bar provides about 965 MPa (140 ksi) tensile strength and 724 MPa (105 ksi) yield strength, with a hardness of 25-35 HRC that complies with NACE MR-01-75 limits for sour gas service. Impact toughness holds at ≥35 ft·lbf (4.85 kgf·m) at -60°C, critical for subsea completions. Density is 8.08 g/cm³ with a melting range of 1311-1366°C. The alloy is ASTM B805 and ASME Code Case 2218 approved and serves from cryogenic temperatures up to 650°C (1200°F).

Diameters span 3 mm to 500 mm in lengths of 1-6 m. Forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, and forged bar in solution-annealed (SA) or solution-annealed and aged (SA+A) conditions. Surface finishes cover black, bright, peeled, and machined. Tolerances conform to h7, h9, h10, h11 per ISO 286-2. Target industries include oil and gas downhole, subsea completions, marine, chemical processing, and high-pressure equipment.

Chemical Composition of Incoloy 925 Round Bar

The chemical composition of Incoloy 925, as defined by UNS N09925 and Special Metals HA 46, is detailed in the table.

Element Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Iron (Fe) Molybdenum (Mo) Copper (Cu) Titanium (Ti) Aluminium (Al) Niobium (Nb) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si)
Composition 42.0 – 46.0 19.5 – 22.5 22.0 min (balance) 2.5 – 3.5 1.5 – 3.0 1.9 – 2.4 0.1 – 0.5 0.5 max 0.03 max 1.0 max 0.5 max

Ti at 1.9-2.4% and Al at 0.1-0.5% are the key differentiators from Alloy 825 (Ti 0.6-1.2%, Al 0.2 max). These higher additions enable γ′ Ni₃ (Al, Ti) precipitation during ageing, transforming 825-level corrosion resistance into a high-strength bar product.

Mechanical Properties of Incoloy 925 Round Bar

Mechanical properties of Incoloy 925, comparing the solution-annealed condition with the aged condition, are mentioned below in the table:

Property Tensile Yield 0.2% Elongation Hardness Impact at -60°C
Sol. Annealed 685 MPa (99 ksi) typ. 271 MPa (39 ksi) typ. 56% ~76 HRB
SA + Aged ≥965 MPa (140 ksi) ≥724 MPa (105 ksi) ≥18% 25-35 HRC ≥35 ft·lbf

Ageing raises yield from 271 to 724 MPa and tensile from 685 to 965 MPa. Hot-worked bars (25.4-254 mm) reach ≥758 MPa (110 ksi) yield. All aged values stay within the NACE MR-01-75 hardness ceiling of ≤35 HRC.

Age-Hardening Treatment & Mechanical Strength in Sour Service

Alloy 925 strengthens through γ′ Ni₃ (Al, Ti) precipitation, the same gamma-prime mechanism used in Inconel 718 and Monel K-500. The age hardening cycle begins with a solution anneal at 980-1040°C (1800-1900°F) for 30 min to 4 hr. Air cool bars ≤25 mm; water quench bars >25 mm.

Age at 732-749°C (1350-1380°F) for 6-9 hours. Furnace cool to 621°C (1150°F) ±8°C, hold for a total ageing time of 18 hours, then air cool. This cycle achieves 25-35 HRC, staying within the NACE MR-01-75 ceiling of ≤35 HRC for sulfide stress cracking (SSC) resistance.

C-ring tests at 100% yield in 5% NaCl + 0.5% acetic acid saturated with H₂S show no cracking. Autoclave tests at 200 psi H₂S and 100 psi CO₂, at 204–260°C, show no stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The rotating beam fatigue limit is about 414 MPa (60 ksi), which is better than Monel K-500.

Machining, Hot Working & Welding of Incoloy 925 Round Bar

Alloy 925 is easy to machine in both solution-annealed (SA) and aged conditions. Use carbide tooling for turning. Rough machine before ageing, finish after. Forge at 927-1177°C. Hot work at 872-983°C; do not exceed 983°C during hot working to preserve corrosion resistance.

Weld by GTAW using INCO-WELD 725NDUR filler. Post-weld heat treatment: anneal at 1040°C/1 hr/AC, then age at 740°C per the standard cycle to restore both strength and corrosion resistance at the joint.

Industries Using Incoloy 925 Round Bar & Rod

Incoloy 925 round bars and rods are used in tough industries where high strength, corrosion resistance, and reliable performance are essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Incoloy 925 Compare to Alloy 825 Round Bar?

Both share similar base corrosion resistance, but 925 is age-hardenable (Ti 1.9-2.4% + Al 0.1-0.5% enable γ′ precipitation), achieving 965 MPa tensile vs 586 MPa for 825 annealed. Specify 925 where both high strength and corrosion resistance are required.

Solution anneal at 980-1040°C. Age at 732-749°C for 6-9 hr, furnace cool to 621°C, hold for 18 hr total, air cool. Achieves 25-35 HRC within NACE limits.

Yes. Impact testing at -60°C shows ≥35 ft·lbf, confirming suitability for subsea completions and low-temperature service.

INCO-WELD 725NDUR for GTAW. Post-weld anneal + age is required to restore strength and corrosion resistance at the weld joint.
