904L stainless steel round bar (UNS N08904 / W.Nr. 1.4539) is a super-austenitic grade combining 25% nickel, 4.5% molybdenum, and 1.5% copper to resist dilute and moderately concentrated sulphuric acid at temperatures up to approximately 35°C under controlled conditions. This copper-bearing super-austenitic grade also handles phosphoric acid and hot organic acids. 904L is a non-stabilised, fully austenitic grade with a non-magnetic structure, high toughness from ambient down to cryogenic temperatures, and good formability for cold bending and drawing operations. The chromium-nickel-molybdenum-copper composition resists pitting, crevice corrosion, oxidation, stress corrosion cracking, and general attack in chloride-bearing and reducing-acid media. PREN reaches approximately 35, well above 316L at ~24. Mechanical properties as per ASTM B649 include a minimum tensile strength of 490 MPa (71 ksi), yield strength of 220 MPa (31 ksi), and 35% min elongation with 90 HRB max hardness.

Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Performance of 904L Bar

904L bar delivers a PREN of approximately 35 (formula: %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N), well above 316L at ~24. Copper provides resistance in reducing acids: sulphuric acid across the full concentration range up to 35°C, phosphoric acid, and hot acetic acid. The 25% Ni content gives improved immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking versus 8% Ni in 304L.

904L is not suitable for nitric acid or strong oxidising environments. Max service temperature as per ASME is approximately 400°C; structural stability degrades above this due to intermetallic precipitation.

Hot Working, Welding & Machining of 904L Bar Stock

It is recommended to hot work this bar at 850–1150°C, and solution anneal at 1060–1140°C with rapid cooling below 700°C. Between 800–900°C, intermetallic phases form within minutes, so rapid cooling through this range is critical.
Weld with matching 904L filler (20 25 CuL electrode). No preheat or PWHT required. Machining requires rigid setups and positive rake angles. The austenitic structure work-hardens more than 304/316, so use reduced cutting speeds in the solution-annealed condition.

904L offers better reducing-acid resistance (sulphuric, phosphoric) due to copper, while 2205 provides higher yield (450 vs 220 MPa) and better chloride SCC resistance. Use 904L for acid handling; use 2205 where strength and chloride resistance drive the design.
