Alloy 59 (UNS N06059, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4605), also identified by VDM’s trade name Nicrofer 5923 hMo, is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum flat-rolled alloy with a nominal balance of Ni 59%, Cr 23%, and Mo 16%. The tensile strength of this grade is around 690 MPa while its yield strength falls at approximately 340 MPa. What separates Nickel Alloy 59 from every other Ni-Cr-Mo sheet product is its ultra-low carbon ceiling of 0.01% max paired with silicon held to just 0.1% max. The alloy contains no tungsten and limits iron to 1.5% max, virtually eliminating grain-boundary carbide and silicide precipitation during welding.

The PREN of Alloy 59 reaches approximately 76, one of the highest among Ni-Cr-Mo alloys. Cold-rolled sheet covers 1 to 7 mm; hot-rolled plate spans 3 to 55 mm with a max piece weight of 2100 kg. Widths go up to 2500 mm, lengths to 12500 mm. Forms include sheet, plate, strip, coil, clad plate, foil, and perforated sheet. Surface finishes are #1 descaled, pickled, and bright annealed. The melting range falls between 1310–1360°C and density is at 8.6 g/cm³. Alloy 59 carries NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Level VII approval and BAM certification for hazardous goods transport.

Chemical Composition of Alloy 59 Sheet & Plate

The chemical composition of Alloy 59 (UNS N06059) sheet and plate as per ASTM B575 / VdTÜV 505 is given below.
Element Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Molybdenum (Mo) Iron (Fe) Aluminium (Al) Cobalt (Co) Carbon (C) Silicon (Si) Manganese (Mn) Copper (Cu) Phosphorus (P) Sulphur (S)
Composition (%) Balance (≈59) 22.0–24.0 15.0–16.5 1.5 max 0.1–0.4 0.3 max 0.01 max 0.1 max 0.5 max 0.5 max 0.015 max 0.01 max

Carbon at 0.01% max and silicon at 0.1% max are the lowest ceilings in the Ni-Cr-Mo family. No tungsten and an iron cap of 1.5% further reduce secondary-phase risk. C276 permits W at 3-4.5% and Fe up to 7%; C22 allows W at 2.5-3.5% and Fe up to 6%. These differences give Alloy 59 plate superior thermal stability in as-welded service.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM B575 Alloy 59 Sheet & Plate

The mechanical properties of Nickel Alloy 59 sheet and plate in solution-annealed condition per VdTÜV 505 are given below.
Property Yield Strength, Rp0.2 (min) Proof Strength, Rp1.0 (min) Tensile Strength (min) Elongation (min) Impact at –196°C (ISO V)
Value 310 MPa (45 ksi) 380 MPa (55 ksi) 690 MPa (100 ksi) 40% ≥ 225 J/cm² (≥ 180 J)

Elevated-temperature yield strength (Rp0.2) drops from 290 MPa at 100°C to 175 MPa at 450°C. The cryogenic impact toughness of 225 J/cm² at –196°C makes Alloy 59 sheet suitable for both high-temperature acid service and LNG applications.

Alloy 59 Sheet & Plate Equivalent Grades

Alloy 59 is recognised across multiple international standards, like its standard equivalent designation as UNS N06059. The other equivalent designations are listed below.
Standard UNS Werkstoff Nr. EN DIN JIS GOST
Designation N06059 2.4605 NiCr23Mo16Al 17750 / 17744 SNi6059
Thermal conductivity rises with temperature: 12.1 W/m·K at 100°C, 13.7 at 200°C, 17.0 at 400°C, and 20.4 W/m·K at 600°C. The low magnetic permeability of 1.001 confirms the stable FCC austenitic structure of Alloy 59 sheet and plate across all service temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance of Alloy 59 Sheet & Plate

Alloy 59 sheet and plate deliver the highest pitting resistance among all Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, with a PREN of approximately 76 (%Cr + 3.3 × %Mo). C276 sits near 69, C22 at roughly 65, and C2000 around 64.

In boiling 10% H₂SO₄, corrosion rate is less than one-third of C276. Hydrochloric acid service, mixed H₂SO₄/HCl condensates in FGD systems, and environments that alternate between oxidising and reducing conditions all fall within this grade’s capability. ASTM G28A results confirm Alloy 59 plate outperforms C276, C2000, and C4. Welded plate retains parent-metal corrosion resistance without PWHT. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 Level VII covers sour gas applications.

Hot Working, Cold Forming & Heat Treatment of Alloy 59

Hot working takes place at 950 to 1180°C. Place material directly into a furnace at maximum temperature, cool rapidly, and follow with a solution anneal. Cold forming requires the annealed condition. Alloy 59 work-hardens faster than austenitic stainless steels; cold deformation above 15% calls for a final anneal.

Solution annealing runs at 1100 to 1180°C (1120°C preferred). VDM’s retention formula: d ≤ 10 mm → d × 3 min/mm; 10–20 mm → 30 + (d−10) × 2 min; >20 mm → 50 + (d−20) × 1 min. Rapid cooling is mandatory. Welding uses TIG, GMAW, plasma, EB, or SMAW with VDM FM 59 (ERNiCrMo-13) filler. Interpass temperature stays below 120°C. Root argon (Ar 4.6) shielding is required. No PWHT needed.

Industries Using Alloy 59 Sheet & Plate

Alloy 59 sheet and plate are specified where the highest corrosion resistance among Ni-Cr-Mo alloys is needed. Five sectors drive demand: FGD, chemical processing, oil and gas, marine, and pharmaceutical.
