ASTM A182 F55 (UNS S32760) Flanges

ASTM A182 F55 Flanges (UNS S32760) - Zeron 100 Super Duplex Supplier in Mumbai

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified trusted supplier of Super Duplex F55 flanges in Mumbai, India. We provide these flanges, manufactured in accordance with ASTM A182 standards.

This super duplex grade (Werkstoff 1.4501) typically contains 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 3.5% molybdenum, plus small additions of tungsten, copper, and nitrogen. It offers high strength, with tensile strength around 730-930 MPa and minimum yield strength of 530 MPa (77 ksi). ASTM A182 F55 is a super duplex forging grade uniquely alloyed with both tungsten and copper. These elements improve its performance in acidic environments. Copper strengthens resistance to non-oxidising acids like sulfuric acid, while tungsten helps maintain a protective oxide film for better crevice corrosion resistance in hot, stagnant chlorides. With a PREN above 40 (PREw around 42), it offers very high corrosion resistance. First developed as the Zeron 100 pump alloy for North Sea seawater service, UNS S32760 is now widely used in acid processing, FGD systems, mining, and high-end offshore projects.

ASTM A182 F55 flanges have a balanced 50/50 austenite–ferrite structure for high strength and corrosion resistance. They are available in many types, including weld neck (WNRF), slip-on (SORF), blind (BLRF), socket weld (SWRF), threaded, lap joint, RTJ, spectacle blind, and reducing flanges. Standard sizes cover NPS 1/2″ to 24″ (ASME B16.5) and 26″ to 60″ (ASME B16.47), in pressure classes from 150 to 2500. The material is approved for sour service by NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, covered by ASME Code Cases 2244-2 and N-564-2 for pressure and nuclear applications.

Chemical Composition of Super Duplex UNS S32760

hemical composition of ASTM A182 F55 (UNS S32760) Super Duplex Flanges is given in the table below.

Grade Cr Ni Mo Cu W N C (max) Fe
F55 (S32760) 24.0-26.0 6.0-8.0 3.0-4.0 0.50% to 1.00% 0.20-0.30 0.030 Balance
PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N). Typical F55: 25 + 11.55 + 4.0 = 40.6. PREw (tungsten-corrected): ~41.8. Copper provides sulfuric acid resistance absent in F53. Tungsten stabilises the passive film for crevice corrosion in hot stagnant seawater.

Mechanical Properties of Super Duplex Steel UNS S32760 F55 Flanges

Mechanical characteristics of F55 super duplex flanges, solution annealed and defined according to ASTM A182:
Property Tensile Strength Yield 0.2% (min) Elongation (min) Hardness (max) Charpy Impact Density Thermal Conductivity
Value 730-930 MPa (106-135 ksi) 530 MPa (77 ksi); typical 580-620 MPa 25% 290 HB ≥100 J at RT; ≥45 J at -50°C 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³) 15 W/m·K at 20°C

Sub-zero toughness to -50°C qualifies F55 for Arctic and deepwater subsea installations. Max 290 HB (vs F53’s 310 HB) reflects F55’s phase balance.

Pressure-Temperature Ratings of Super Duplex F55 Flanges

Super Duplex UNS S32760 flanges (ASTM A182 Grade F55) are rated per ASME B16.5, Material Group 2.8. These flanges carry a maximum service temperature limit of 315°C (600°F) because prolonged exposure above this range risks sigma-phase embrittlement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does F55 Contain Tungsten and Copper While F53 does not?
F55 was developed as “Zeron 100” for North Sea pump castings needing both chloride and acid tolerance. Tungsten stabilises the passive film for crevice corrosion in hot stagnant conditions. Copper resists non-oxidising acids, especially H₂SO₄. F53 was developed as a simpler 25Cr-7Ni-4Mo-N composition for chloride pitting without acid-service needs.
Technically, yes, but not always advisable. F55 costs 15-25% more, has fewer qualified mills, and tungsten makes it more sensitive to improper heat treatment. F53 has higher N (0.24-0.32% vs 0.20-0.30%) for marginally better weld zone properties. Specify F55 only when W+Cu advantages are required.
ASME B16.5 gives a maximum recommended temperature of 316°C (600°F), but it is advised to keep it below 300°C to maintain better toughness. Tungsten increases the risk of forming chi (χ) phase as well as sigma phase during heating, and this can start at lower temperatures than in tungsten‑free F53.
Significantly better, due to 0.50-1.00% Cu. In H₂SO₄ up to ~20% below 60°C, F55 maintains acceptable rates where F53 corrodes. This drives F55 selection for FGD scrubbers, mining acid leach circuits, and pickling plant piping.
Yes. It is approved by ASME BPVC Section III Division 1 under Code Case N-564-2 for Class 1, 2, and 3 components. This nuclear approval is a key advantage compared to F53.
