Monel 400 sheet and plate are flat-rolled nickel-copper alloy (63% Ni, 28-34% Cu) products manufactured according to ASTM B127 / ASME SB127. This alloy (UNS N04400, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4360) resists flowing seawater, hydrofluoric acid, de-aerated sulfuric acid, and caustic alkalis across a service range of -196°C to 538°C (1000°F). Per ASTM B127, material under 6.35 mm is classified as sheet; 6.35 mm and above is plate. Sheet thickness spans 0.1 to 4.76 mm; plate from 4.76 to 100 mm. Widths run 1000 to 2500 mm, lengths up to 6000 mm for sheets and 12000 mm for plates. Standard sizes include 1000×2000, 1220×2440, 1500×3000, and 2000×4000 mm. Hot-rolled plate (annealed) reaches 485 MPa (70 ksi) minimum tensile strength with 35% elongation per ASTM B127. Cold-rolled sheet is available in soft, quarter-hard, half-hard, and spring-hard tempers. Surface finishes cover #1, #2D, #2B, BA, and mirror polish. The melting range falls between 1300-1350°C (2370–2460°F). Density is 8.80 g/cm³.

Available forms include sheet, plate, strip, coil, foil, shim, clad plate, and perforated sheet in hot-rolled and cold-rolled processes. The alloy is weldable by GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW with no post-weld heat treatment required. Target industries include marine, oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and aerospace.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate

Monel 400 chemical composition per ASTM B127, UNS N04400, has been given in the table below. This alloy has around 63% nickel and cobalt combined, and 28-34% copper.
Nickel (Ni) + Cobalt (Co) Copper (Cu) Iron (Fe) Manganese (Mn) Carbon (C) Silicon (Si) Sulphur (S)
63.0 min 28.0 – 34.0 2.5 max 2.0 max 0.3 max 0.5 max 0.024 max
The 63% Ni / 28-34% Cu balance gives Monel 400 sheet immunity to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. Copper drives reducing-acid resistance; nickel provides the structural base for seawater and alkali service.

Corrosion Resistance of Monel 400 Sheet & Plate

Monel 400 corrosion resistance covers seawater, reducing acids, and caustic alkalis in sheet and plate applications:
Medium Corrosion Rate (mpy)
Seawater (flowing) < 1
Hydrofluoric Acid (48%) < 5
Sulphuric Acid (de-aerated, 10%) < 5
Caustic Soda (50%, 80°C) < 2
Not recommended for nitric acid, ammonia systems, or oxidising acids. For oxidising conditions, consider Inconel 625 plate.

Hot Working, Cold Forming & Heat Treatment of Monel 400

Hot work Monel 400 plate at 649-1177°C (1200–2150°F). Begin heavy reductions at the upper end. Do not work below 649°C. The alloy work-hardens between mild steel and SS 304 rates, and adapts to deep drawing, spinning, and bending in annealed condition
Anneal at 871°C (1600°F) minimum for full stress relief. Weld by GTAW, GMAW, or SMAW using ERNiCu-7 (AWS A5.14, Monel FM 60) for GTAW/GMAW and ENiCu-7 (AWS A5.11, Monel 190 electrode) for SMAW. No PWHT is required. Clean surfaces thoroughly before welding to remove sulphur and phosphorus contamination.

Industrial Applications

Monel 400 Sheet vs Plate – When to Use Which?

When it comes to selecting Monel 400 plate and sheet, people usually get confused. The selection depends on your application requirements. Here is a side-by-side comparison:
Parameter Sheet Plate
Thickness 0.1 – 4.76 mm ≥4.76 mm
Process Cold Rolled Hot Rolled or CR
Surface Smoother (2B, BA) Rougher (#1, 2D)
Formability Higher (bend, draw) Lower
Use Gaskets, linings, light fab Vessels, tanks, structural
If you need material under 6 mm for gaskets, cladding, or precision components, go with sheet. For structural work, pressure vessel shells, or tank construction above 6 mm, plate is the right call. Materials in the 4.8–6.4 mm overlap zone can be ordered as either form depending on the surface finish and tolerance you need.
