Inconel 718 Round Bars

Inconel 718 Round Bars – ASTM B637 UNS N07718 | Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier and stockist of Inconel 718 round bars and rods based in Mumbai, India. We provide Alloy 718 round bar according to the ASTM B637 / ASME SB637 standard.

Alloy 718 (UNS N07718, Werkstoff 2.4668) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium-iron superalloy (Ni 50–55%, Cr 17–21%, Fe balance) with Mo, Nb, Ti, and Al additions. Gamma-double-prime (γ′′) Ni₃Nb is the primary strengthening precipitate for Inconel 718, with gamma-prime (γ′) Ni₃ (Al, Ti) providing secondary hardening. In the solution-annealed and aged condition as per AMS 5663, Alloy 718 rod reaches ≥1241 MPa (180 ksi) tensile and ≥1034 MPa (150 ksi) yield strength at 36–44 HRC. API 6A CRA bars for oil and gas meet NACE MR-01-75 at ≤40 HRC. Service spans –253°C to 704°C (1300°F).

Diameters range from 3 to 500 mm in lengths of 1–6 m. Forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, forged bar, hollow bar, and billet. We supply these round bars in conditions like mill annealed, solution annealed (SA), and SA and aged (precipitation hardened). Surface finishes cover black, bright, turned, ground, and peeled. For aerospace, specify VIM+VAR or VIM+ESR double-melted bar stock per AMS 5663. Density is 8.19 g/cm³ with a melting range of 1260–1336°C. We supply Nickel Superalloy 718 bar stock with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports. It is used in aerospace and gas turbine engines, oil & gas, nuclear power, cryogenic and space applications, and automotive & motorsport.

Heat Treatment of Inconel 718 Round Bar

Inconel 718 heat treatment follows a two-stage sequence. Solution anneal at 924–1010°C (1700–1850°F) for 0.5 hr min, water quench preferred. For maximum creep-rupture strength, use a higher solution temp of 1038–1066°C (1900–1950°F).

Standard ageing as per AMS 5663 recommends holding for 8 hours at 718°C, furnace cool at 55°C/hour to 621°C, continue holding to a total of 18 hours, then air cool. For higher creep resistance: 760°C / 10 hr, furnace cool to 649°C, total 20 hr. Bars are typically purchased mill-annealed for machining, then heat-treated after fabrication. Furnace atmosphere must be clean and the temperature held within ±14°C.

Machining & Welding of Inconel 718 Bar

Inconel 718 is the most machinable of the precipitation-hardened superalloys. Machine in solution-annealed condition before ageing. Use carbide tooling at 15–25 m/min with heavy steady feeds. Maintain constant cutting depth to avoid the work-hardened layer.

Hot work at 982–1149°C; do not work below 871°C. Weld by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, or EB welding using ERNiFeCr-2 (INCONEL 718 filler). Post-weld solution annealing and ageing restores full strength. Interpass temp is up to 93°C max.

Industries Using Inconel 718 Round Bar & Rod

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Difference between AMS 5662 and AMS 5663 for Inconel 718 Bar?

AMS 5662 covers bars in solution-treated (annealed) condition for further machining and end-user ageing. AMS 5663 covers bars already solution-treated and aged (precipitation hardened) and ready for final machining.

Inconel 718 reaches ≥1241 MPa tensile strength through precipitation hardening, nearly double that of annealed 625 (~827 MPa). For bolts and studs needing high preload at elevated temperatures, 718 is the standard choice. Alloy 625 is preferred where aqueous corrosion resistance outweighs strength.

The maximum service temperature for Inconel 718 round bar is 704°C (1300°F). Above this, γ′′ precipitates over-age and dissolves. This causes strength loss. For higher temperatures, consider Inconel X-750 or Waspaloy.

Yes. Inconel 718 maintains properties down to –253°C (–423°F) with no ductile-to-brittle transition. This makes it suitable for liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen in rocket and space launch components.

Inconel 718 round bar price typically ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹ 3,500 per kg. It depends on diameter, condition (SA vs SA+Aged), melting practice (VIM+VAR commands a premium), and current nickel/niobium market rates. Contact Nicorex Alloys for current pricing.
For aerospace applications (AMS 5663), VIM+VAR (Vacuum Induction Melting + Vacuum Arc Remelting) or VIM+ESR (Electroslag Remelting) is typically specified. Double melting reduces segregation of niobium and improves fatigue life. For general industrial use, single-melt (EF+AOD) may be acceptable.
