Inconel 600 Round Bars

Inconel 600 Round Bars & Rods - ASTM B166 UNS N06600 | Supplier in Mumbai, India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier and stockist of Inconel 600 round bars and rods based in Mumbai, India. Alloy 600 (UNS N06600, Werkstoff 2.4816) is a solid-solution-strengthened nickel-chromium-iron alloy (72% Ni min, 14-17% Cr, 6-10% Fe) manufactured to ASTM B166 / ASME SB166.

This nickel-chromium alloy bar is not precipitation hardenable; it is strengthened only by cold working. Thus, it is the reference Inconel for high-temperature oxidation resistance and thermal cycling durability. Inconel 600 bar hot finished and annealed has a tensile strength ranging from 550 to 690 MPa (80 to 100 ksi) with 35 to 55% elongation. However, if the bar is cold-drawn, the tensile strength rises to 725 to 1035 MPa (105 to 150 ksi) with 10 to 30% elongation. With continuous exposure, a stable chromium oxide scale, Cr₂O₃, protects the bar stock up to 1093°C (2000°F). The alloy has a nickel content of approximately 72%, which provides immunity to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking and resistance in caustic NaOH solutions. Its density is 8.47 g/cm³, and its melting point range is 1354 to 1413°C.

Diameters span 3-500 mm in lengths of 1-6 m. Forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, rectangular bar, forged bar, hollow bar, and threaded rod. Conditions: annealed, hot finished, cold drawn, and stress relieved. Surface finishes cover black, bright, polished, turned, ground, and peeled. AMS 5665 / AMS 5687 for aerospace. Nickel Alloy 600 rod is available in custom cut lengths with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports.

Chemical Composition of Nickel Alloy 600 Bar & Rod

Inconel 600 chemical composition according to ASTM B166, highlighting the need for high nickel content to provide excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, is as follows:
Element Nickel (Ni) + Cobalt Chromium (Cr) Iron (Fe) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Copper (Cu) Sulphur (S)
Content (wt%) 72.0 min 14.0 – 17.0 6.0 – 10.0 0.15 max 1.0 max 0.50 max 0.50 max 0.015 max
The 72% nickel base with 15% chromium forms the foundation for high-temperature oxidation resistance. No Mo or Nb additions mean Alloy 600 relies on solid-solution strengthening alone. The 0.15% max carbon contributes to elevated-temperature strength through carbide formation.

Property Tensile Yield 0.2% Elongation Hardness
Annealed 550-690 MPa (80-100 ksi) 172−345 MPa (25-50 ksi) 35-55% 65-85 HRB
Cold Drawn 725-1035 MPa (105-150 ksi) 550-860 MPa (80-125 ksi) 10-30% 90 HRB – 30 HRC
Cold drawing increases yield from 205 to 550+ MPa without any heat treatment. Values depend on diameter, reduction ratio, and final condition. Inconel 600 is not age-hardenable.

High-Temperature Performance of Inconel 600 Bar & Rod

Inconel 600 bar forms a stable Cr₂O₃ oxide layer that resists oxidation and scaling in continuous service to 1093°C (2000°F). The alloy also resists carburisation in carbon-bearing atmospheres, making it suited for heat-treating furnace hardware, retorts, and muffles.

The 72% nickel content provides immunity to chloride-ion SCC and resists caustic NaOH environments. Bar stock withstands repeated heating/cooling cycles without cracking. NACE MR-01-75 listed. Inconel 600 is not recommended for strong oxidising acids (HNO₃) or sulphur-bearing reducing atmospheres above 600°C.

Machining, Hot Working & Welding of Inconel 600 Bar

Inconel 600 machining falls between SS 304 and SS 303 in difficulty. Use carbide tooling at 20-40 m/min with heavy steady feeds and sulphurised cutting fluids. Avoid the work-hardened surface layer.

Hot work at 870-1230°C. Avoid 650-870°C (low-ductility zone). Anneal after heavy work. Weld by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, or SAW using ERNiCr-3 (Filler Metal 82) or ENiCrFe-3 (Electrode 182). No preheat or PWHT required. Interpass: 150°C max.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ASTM Specification covers Inconel 600 Round Bar?

ASTM B166 (ASME SB166) covers Inconel 600 rod, bar, and wire. AMS 5665 applies for aerospace bar and forgings.

No. Inconel 600 is a solid-solution alloy strengthened only by cold work. For an age-hardenable nickel-chromium grade, consider Inconel X-750 (UNS N07750) with Al and Ti additions.

Continuous oxidation service to 1093°C (2000°F). For sustained-load applications, the practical limit is ~600°C due to creep. Cryogenic toughness is retained.

Alloy 600 (Ni-Cr-Fe) is suited for dry heat and furnace applications. Alloy 625 (Ni-Cr-Mo-Nb) adds 9% Mo and 3.5% Nb for superior aqueous corrosion, pitting, and higher strength. Choose 600 for oxidation resistance; choose 625 for wet corrosive environments.
Typically ₹2,500-3,500 per kg depending on diameter, condition, finish, and nickel LME rates. Contact Nicorex Alloys for current pricing.
