Hastelloy flanges are forged nickel-based superalloy piping components made under ASTM B564 / ASME SB564 and ASTM B462 / ASME SB462. What are Hastelloy Flanges?

Hastelloy flanges are forged piping connectors made from nickel-based superalloys. High molybdenum (up to 28% in B-series) gives strong reducing acid resistance. Chromium in C-series adds oxidising protection. C276 resists both oxidising and reducing acids. C22 offers better weld-zone performance. B2 gives the strongest HCl and H₂SO₄ resistance. C276 melts at about 1325°C-1370°C, with hot forming at 1750°F. Hastelloy flanges are chosen over Inconel and Monel for acid chloride and FGD scrubber service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Hastelloy B2 flanges be used in oxidising environments?

No. B2 has no chromium and is built only for reducing acids. Oxidising media or ferric/cupric salts cause rapid attack. Use C276 or C22 instead.

Which ASTM standards cover Hastelloy flanges?

ASTM B564 / ASME SB564 covers C276, C22, and X. ASTM B462 / ASME SB462 covers B2 and B3. Dimensions follow ANSI/ASME B16.5 and B16.47.

What welding methods are used for Hastelloy flanges?

GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW work well. Use ERNiCrMo-4 filler for C276 and ERNiCrMo-10 for C22 per AWS A5.14. Keep interpass temperature below 200°F (93°C). Oxyacetylene and SAW are not recommended.

Why are Hastelloy flanges preferred over Inconel for acid handling?

Hastelloy C276 has 16% molybdenum versus 9% in Inconel 625, giving much better HCl and H₂SO₄ resistance. Tungsten in C276 also improves localised corrosion protection.
