UNS S32205 (ASTM A182 F60 / W.Nr. 1.4462) is the industry’s most widely specified duplex grade, engineered with tighter chemistry controls than its predecessor S31803 to guarantee a PREN ≈ 35 and reliable performance in aggressive chloride and sour-gas environments. The microstructure of S32205 has two phases: about 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. This gives it a yield strength above 448 MPa (65 ksi), which is about twice that of 316L stainless steel. It also has a minimum tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi), 25% elongation, and a maximum hardness of 293 HBW, according to ASTM A276. S32205 tightens the nitrogen (0.14-0.20%) and chromium (22.0-23.0%) ranges of S31803, eliminating borderline heats that underperform in aggressive service.

Our duplex 2205 round bar is available in diameters from 6 mm to 350 mm, hot rolled and cold drawn, with service temperature from -50°C to +300°C. All bars ship in solution-annealed condition with ferrite content verified at 40-60%. Specifications include ASTM A276, A479, ASME SA276/SA479 for bar, and ASTM A182 Grade F60 for forged bar. Hot Forming, Welding & Machining of Duplex S32205 Bar

Hot form at 955-1230°C. Do not work below 955°C to avoid intermetallic formation. Solution anneal at 1040°C minimum with rapid water quench after all hot work.

Weld with ER2209 filler (AWS A5.9). No preheat needed. Interpass max 150°C. Use Ar + 2% N₂ for root shielding to maintain austenite in the HAZ. PWHT is not normally required. Perform ASTM A923 testing to check for harmful intermetallic phases in critical applications.

For machining, use rigid setups and new carbide inserts. Cutting forces run higher than 316L, but S32205 work-hardens less than fully austenitic grades.

Duplex S32205 round bar ranges from ₹480 to ₹950 per kg in India, depending on diameter, finish, and quantity. A forged F60 bar usually costs about 20-35% more than a regular bar.
S32205 requires at least 22.0% chromium, 3.0% molybdenum, and 0.14% nitrogen (higher minimum levels than S31803), which ensures a PREN of 35 or more. For chloride-critical or NACE-rated service, S32205 (F60) avoids the composition variability seen with S31803.

S32205 remains tough down to -50°C and gives Charpy impact values of at least 45 J at -40°C. Below -50°C, the ferrite phase changes from ductile to brittle behaviour. For cryogenic service, use austenitic grades like 316L.
