904L Stainless Steel Sheets & Plates Supplier in Mumbai, India
Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier of 904L stainless steel sheets and plates based in Mumbai, India. UNS N08904 (Werkstoff 1.4539, EN X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5) is a super austenitic stainless steel with Ni 23-28%, Cr 19-23%, Mo 4-5%, and Cu 1-2%, manufactured to ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 and ASTM B625 / ASME SB625. Originally developed for sulfuric acid service in fertiliser plants, Alloy 904L combines Mo + Cu for reducing acid resistance with high Ni for chloride SCC immunity.
Very low carbon (max 0.020%) prevents sensitisation in welded joints and keeps the heat-affected zone free from intergranular corrosion. A PREN of 34 or higher gives better pitting resistance. The grade is non-magnetic in all conditions. With tensile strength of 490 MPa and 36% elongation, 904L plates are suitable for ASME Section VIII pressure vessels and deep-drawn linings. The alloy cannot be age-hardened and is strengthened only by cold working.
Sheet thickness ranges from 0.5 to 4.76 mm, and plate thickness from 4.76 to 150 mm, with widths between 1000-2500 mm. Sheet lengths go up to 6000 mm, and plate lengths up to 12500 mm. Available forms include hot-rolled plate, cold-rolled sheet, strip, coil, foil, shim, perforated sheet, and chequered plate. Finishes offered are No.1, 2B, 2D, BA, No.4, and No.8 mirrors. The material is supplied in the solution-annealed condition, suitable for use up to about 400°C. It is delivered with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates (MTC), positive material identification (PMI), and full traceability.

Chemical Composition of SS 904L Sheet & Plate
The chemical composition of 904L (UNS N08904) is specified by ASTM A240, which defines which alloying elements are allowed and their percentage ranges.
| Nickel (Ni) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Copper (Cu) | Carbon (C) | Nitrogen (N) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Phosphorus (P) | Sulphur (S) | Iron (Fe) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23.0 – 28.0 | 19.0 – 23.0 | 4.0 – 5.0 | 1.0 – 2.0 | 0.020 max | 0.10 max | 2.00 max | 1.00 max | 0.045 max | 0.035 max | Balance |
The combination of 4–5% molybdenum (Mo) and 1–2% copper (Cu) helps the alloy resist sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Ni at 23-28% prevents chloride SCC in fabricated vessels. Ultra-low C (0.020% max) keeps weld HAZ free of sensitisation, preserving intergranular corrosion resistance.
Mechanical Properties of 904L Steel Sheet & Plate
Mechanical properties in the solution‑annealed condition are specified according to ASTM A240 requirements for stainless steel sheet and plate products:
| Tensile Strength (min) | Yield 0.2% Offset (min) | Elongation (min) | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|
| 490 MPa (71 ksi) | 220 MPa (31 ksi) | 35% | 70-90 HRB typical; 150 HB max |
The 490 MPa tensile / 35% elongation combination suits ASME Sec. VIII pressure vessels while allowing deep drawing and cold forming of sheets for linings. Cold work increases strength but reduces ductility; 904L is not age-hardenable.
Physical Properties of Stainless Steel 904L Sheets & Plates
Physical properties of UNS N08904 describe its density, thermal behaviour, mechanical stiffness, melting range, and magnetic characteristics in service conditions:
| Density | Melting Range | Elastic Modulus | Thermal Conductivity (20°C) | Thermal Expansion (0-100°C) | Magnetic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7.95 g/cm³ (0.287 lb/in³) | 1300-1390°C (2372-2534°F) | 190 GPa (28.0 × 10⁶ psi) | 11.5 W/m·K | 15.0 µm/m/°C | Non-magnetic (fully austenitic) |
Thermal conductivity is roughly 30% of carbon steel. Use lower heat input during welding to control distortion on large plates.

Corrosion Resistance of 904L Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
904L was developed for dilute sulfuric acid service. At temperatures up to 35°C, it resists 0-100% H₂SO₄ concentration. Mo + Cu handles reducing conditions where 316L fails rapidly. In wet-process phosphoric acid (85%, 80°C), corrosion rate stays below 0.5 mm/yr. In flowing seawater: <0.025 mm/yr. PREN ≥34, well above 316L (~25).
Ni at 23-28% gives strong chloride SCC resistance for seawater heat exchangers and marine plates. Good performance in organic acids (acetic, formic) for pulp and food processing. Not recommended for nitric acid (Mo-free grades like 304L perform better) or long-term service above 400°C where structural stability degrades.
Hot Working, Cold Forming & Heat Treatment of 904L Sheet & Plate
Hot work at 850-1150°C. Do not work below 850°C to avoid embrittlement. Solution anneal at 1090-1175°C + rapid water quench to restore corrosion resistance. 904L cold forms well by bending, pressing, and deep drawing, though the work hardening rate is higher than standard austenitic grades. Weld with ER385 (matching) or ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625, overmatching). No preheat/PWHT. Heat input ≤1.5 kJ/mm, interpass below 140°C.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Price of 904L Sheet and Plate per Kg in India?
Indicative: ₹750-1,250/kg depending on thickness, finish, and nickel/Mo market rates. Thinner cold-rolled BA sheets cost more per kg than thick hot-rolled plates. Contact Nicorex Alloys for current pricing.
Can 904L Plates be Used for Pressure Vessel Construction?
Yes. 904L plates per ASME SA240 (N08904) are approved under ASME BPVC Sec. VIII Div. 1 and 2 in the solution-annealed condition.
What is the Maximum Service Temperature?
Approximately 400°C (752°F). Above this, sigma phase precipitation degrades properties. For higher temperatures, use Alloy 825 or 6Mo stainless grades (such as S31254).
How Does 904L Compare to Duplex 2205?
904L has better resistance to sulfuric and phosphoric acids because it contains copper and a higher nickel content. Duplex 2205 provides roughly double the yield (448 vs 220 MPa) and better chloride SCC at elevated temperature. 904L for reducing acids; Duplex 2205, where strength and cost efficiency are priorities.
Is 904L Stainless Steel Magnetic?
No. 904L is fully austenitic and non-magnetic. Slight magnetism from heavy cold work can be removed by solution annealing.
What Filler Metal is Used for Welding 904L Plates?
ER385/E385 (matching) or ERNiCrMo-3 / Inconel 625 (overmatching). No preheat/PWHT. Heat input ≤1.5 kJ/mm, interpass <140°C.
