Alloy 600 (UNS N06600, Werkstoff 2.4816) is a nickel‑chromium‑iron alloy that gains its strength from solid‑solution hardening. With a minimum nickel content of 72%, this alloy is essentially immune to chloride‑ion stress corrosion cracking, a major degradation mechanism in chloride‑bearing environments. In addition to this SCC resistance, Inconel 600 performs reliably in caustic alkalis at all concentrations up to 315°C and remains highly stable in high‑purity water. Because of these properties, Alloy 600 is a popular choice for flat parts used in nuclear steam generators, caustic evaporators, and high‑temperature furnace equipment.
AMS 5540 covers aerospace‑grade Inconel 600, which resists oxidation up to 1095°C (2000°F) and performs reliably in very harsh conditions. It comes as a sheet (0.5–6.0 mm) and a plate (6.0–100 mm) in widths of 1000–2500 mm and lengths of 2000–6000 mm. Available forms include hot‑rolled plate, cold‑rolled sheet, strip, coil, foil, shim, clad plate, and perforated sheet, giving engineers many options for fabrication. Common surface finishes are 2B, 2D, BA, No.1, No.4, and mirror. These products are widely used in nuclear, chemical processing, heat treatment, aerospace, and electronics industries where long‑term strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

Corrosion & Environmental Performance of Inconel 600 Flat Products
Nickel Alloy 600 sheets and plates resist corrosion in three key ways: they are safe from chloride stress cracking, stand up well to strong caustic chemicals, and stay stable in very clean (high‑purity) water. The 72% Ni content eliminates the chloride SCC susceptibility threshold. In caustic soda (NaOH), Alloy 600 plate resists all concentrations up to 315°C (600°F), making it the default lining material for caustic evaporators and chlor-alkali equipment.
In nuclear primary coolant (high-purity, deaerated water at 300-350°C), UNS N06600 sheet provides long-term stability for steam generator tube support structures. Inconel 600 also resists dry chlorine and HCl gas at elevated temperatures, a niche where most stainless steels and even some nickel alloys fail. Compared to 316L, Alloy 600 eliminates chloride SCC risk (72% vs 10-14% Ni). Compared to Inconel 625, Alloy 600 is more cost-effective for caustic and nuclear service where Mo/Nb additions are not needed.
Welding & Fabrication for Inconel 600 Sheet & Plate
Weld using GTAW (preferred for sheet gauge), GMAW, or SMAW. Filler: ERNiCr-3 (FM 82) for GTAW/GMAW; ENiCrFe-3 (Weld A) for SMAW. No preheat required. PWHT is not typically needed because Alloy 600 is solid-solution strengthened and not susceptible to post-weld precipitation. Stress relief at 870-980°C if code requires it.
Minimise heat input on the thin sheet. Clean all joint surfaces to remove sulphur and phosphorus contamination. Interpass below 150°C. For dissimilar joints (600-to-carbon steel or 600-to-stainless), ERNiCr-3 filler prevents carbon migration and maintains corrosion resistance at the weld interface.
Industries Using Inconel 600 Sheets & Plates
-
Nuclear Power Generation: Steam generator tube support plates, reactor vessel internals, and primary coolant system baffle plates. UNS N06600 flat products provide long-term stability in high-purity water at 300-350°C under neutron flux.
- Chemical & Food Processing: Caustic evaporator linings, process vessel walls, and heat exchanger tubesheets. Nickel Alloy 600 plate handles NaOH at all concentrations to 315°C and resists organic/inorganic acids at moderate conditions.
- Heat Treating Equipment: Muffles, retorts, annealing covers, furnace linings, and radiant tubes. Alloy 600 sheet resists oxidation and carburisation in endothermic/exothermic gas atmospheres to 1095°C.
- Aerospace: Exhaust manifolds, turbine seals, lockwire, and engine exhaust liners. AMS 5540 sheet provides oxidation resistance with good formability for complex ducting shapes.
- Electronics: Used in parts like cathode ray tubes, thyristors, and small hardware springs. Inconel Alloy 600 sheet keeps its electrical and mechanical properties stable over a wide range of temperatures, making it reliable for these components.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Makes Inconel 600 Sheet Immune to Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking?
72% minimum nickel eliminates the chloride SCC susceptibility threshold. Austenitic stainless steels (304, 316) with 8-14% Ni are highly susceptible. This immunity makes Alloy 600 the preferred flat product for chloride-bearing environments.
Is Inconel 600 Sheet Suitable for Nuclear Applications?
Yes. Inconel 600 is extensively used in nuclear steam generators and pressurised water reactor components for its high-purity water resistance and chloride SCC immunity. It operates from cryogenic to 1095°C (2000°F).
What Filler Metal for Welding Alloy 600 Sheet?
ERNiCr-3 (FM 82) for GTAW/GMAW; ENiCrFe-3 (Weld A) for SMAW. No preheat needed. GTAW is preferred for thin sheet gauges.
