Alloy 825 (UNS N08825, Werkstoff 2.4858) is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with Mo, Cu, and Ti additions. The nominal balance of Ni 38–46%, Cr 19.5–23.5%, Fe 22% min, Mo 2.5–3.5%, Cu 1.5–3.0%, and Ti 0.6–1.2% gives this alloy dual-environment resistance: Mo + Cu + Ni handles reducing acids (H₂SO₄, H₃PO₄), while Cr resists oxidising acids (HNO₃). Designed to provide structural integrity in highly aggressive chemical environments, this austenitic superalloy displays enhanced resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking and localised pitting corrosion. The optimised chemical composition of this superalloy is specifically tailored to provide optimal performance in highly variable processing environments, particularly where varying levels of sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid are present. The metallurgy of this superalloy provides mechanical integrity in both cryogenic and high-temperature environments.

Ti stabilisation binds carbon to TiC, preventing Cr₂₃C₆ precipitation at grain boundaries. This blocks sensitisation and intergranular corrosion (IGC) in the as-welded condition, eliminating the need for PWHT in most services. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 is listed for sour gas (H₂S + CO₂ + Cl⁻). Incoloy 825 is available in the form of sheets and plates. The thickness of the sheets ranges from 0.5 to 4.76 mm, and the thickness of the plates ranges from 4.76 to 100 mm. The width of the sheets and plates ranges from 1000 to 2500 mm. The available product forms are hot-rolled plate, cold-rolled sheet, strip, coil, foil, shim, and clad plate. The available finishes are No.1, 2D, 2B, BA, or No.4.

Chemical Composition of Nickel Alloy 825 Sheet & Plate

Refer to the table below for the chemical composition of Incoloy 825 as per ASTM B424, focusing on the addition of titanium, which counteracts intergranular corrosion.

Element Nickel (Ni) Iron (Fe) Chromium (Cr) Molybdenum (Mo) Copper (Cu) Titanium (Ti) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Sulphur (S) Aluminium (Al)
Composition 38.0 – 46.0 22.0 min 19.5 – 23.5 2.5 – 3.5 1.5 – 3.0 0.6 – 1.2 0.05 max 1.0 max 0.5 max 0.03 max 0.2 max

Ni at 38–46% crosses the chloride SCC immunity threshold where 316L (10–14% Ni) fails. Cu + Mo + Ni synergy gives Incoloy 825 reducing acid resistance that 304/316 stainless steels cannot match.

Mechanical Properties of Incoloy 825 Sheets & Plates

Review the table below for the mechanical properties of Incoloy 825 in its solution-annealed condition as per ASTM B424 to ensure that the project meets the specified yield strengths.

Condition Tensile Strength Yield 0.2% Offset Elongation Hardness
Annealed 586 MPa (85 ksi) 241 MPa (35 ksi) 30% Not specified
Cold Worked 662 MPa (96 ksi) 338 MPa (49 ksi) 45% 135–165 HB

Above 540°C (1000°F), eta and sigma phases form, causing ductility and impact strength to drop. Alloy 825 is not a creep-service material. For service above 540°C, specify Incoloy 800H/HT or Inconel 625.

Corrosion Performance of Incoloy 825 in Acid & Chloride Environments

Cu + Mo + Ni synergy gives INCOLOY 825 strong reducing acid resistance. In 0.5% H₂SO₄ at 99°C, corrosion sits at ~2 mpy (0.05 mm/a). In dilute H₂SO₄ with ammonium sulfate at 35–40°C: ~0.1 mpy. Plates also resist H₃PO₄, mixed acids (HNO₃ + H₂SO₄), and spent acid from tall oil splitting. Cr at 19.5–23.5% handles oxidising media including nitric acid and ferric chloride.

Ni at 38–46% makes Alloy 825 immune to chloride SCC where 316L fails above 60°C. Mo provides pitting and crevice resistance in halide media. Ti stabilisation prevents IGC in welded plate joints. For H₂SO₄ above 80% or HCl above 10%, evaluate Hastelloy C-276 or Alloy 59.

NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Compliance for Sour Gas Service

W.Nr. 2.4858 is listed in NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 for H₂S-bearing environments. Condition: solution annealed (stabilising anneal preferred for welded components). Hardness must meet ISO 15156-3. Oil and gas buyers cannot use non-NACE listed materials in sour service. Every Nicorex Alloys shipment for sour service includes EN 10204 3.1/3.2 MTC with NACE compliance statement, hardness certification, and heat treatment records.

Welding & Fabrication for Alloy 825 Sheet & Plate

Filler metals: ERNiFeCr-1 (matching, AWS A5.14) for 825-to-825 GTAW/GMAW joints; ENiCrMo-3 (INCONEL® 112, AWS A5.11) for SMAW. For dissimilar joints (825 to carbon steel, stainless, or other Ni alloys) or maximum corrosion resistance, use ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel® 625, AWS A5.14). GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, and SAW are all compatible. No PWHT required due to Ti stabilisation, which binds carbon to TiC and prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries. Stabilising anneal at 940°C (1725°F) for 1 hr recommended in IGC-critical service. Hot work: 870-1180°C. Cold forming similar to Inconel 600, with higher work-hardening than austenitic SS. Anneal after cold work at 940-980°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Incoloy 825 Plate be used in Sour Gas Without PWHT?

Yes for most services. Ti stabilisation allows as-welded condition per NACE MR0175. For IGC-critical environments, a stabilising anneal at 940°C is recommended.

ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625) is preferred for dissimilar joints. Its higher Cr + Mo content prevents dilution-related corrosion at the weld interface. ERNiFeCr-1 is used for 825-to-825 joints.

Above 540°C (1000°F). Eta and sigma phases form, degrading ductility and impact strength. For higher temperatures, specify Incoloy 800H/HT or Inconel 625.

Performance drops above 80% concentration at elevated temperature. For >80% H₂SO₄, evaluate Hastelloy C-276 or Alloy 59. Alloy 825 excels in dilute to moderate H₂SO₄ (up to ~60–70%) at moderate temperatures.

Yes. 316L fails via chloride SCC above ~60°C in seawater. Alloy 825’s 38–46% Ni provides full SCC immunity, justifying the cost premium through extended service life.

MTC per EN 10204 3.1 (minimum) or 3.2 (with TPI). Must include chemical composition, mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation, and hardness), heat treatment condition, grain size, and IGC test results per ASTM G28. For sour service: NACE MR0175 compliance statement + hardness certification.
