Alloy 625 LCF (UNS N06626) is a high-performance nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy with enhanced fatigue properties. This alloy is produced using the Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) process. The metallurgical properties of this alloy include a low carbon content of 0.03% maximum and a low silicon threshold of 0.15% maximum. This alloy has a clean microstructure with no grain boundary precipitation. Controlled nitrogen (0.02% max.) and a mandatory ASTM grain size of No. 5 or finer deliver improvement in low-cycle fatigue life. This fatigue-resistant characteristic makes Nickel Alloy 625 LCF the material of choice for bellows, expansion joints, flexible exhaust couplings, and gas turbine connectors. This attribute is especially true for applications involving endurance life over millions of flexure cycles.
The thickness of Inconel 625 LCF sheet ranges from 0.13 mm to 6.4 mm, and the width can go up to 1219 mm. The sheet can be supplied in coil form or cut to length. The alloy is supplied in the form of cold-rolled sheet, strip, foil, or shim, which can be finished in 2B or bright annealed (BA). The alloy is known for its excellent oxidation resistance and formability. It is used in applications where high strength is required at elevated temperatures.

|---|---|---|
| Carbon (max) | 0.10% | 0.03% |
| Silicon (max) | 0.50% | 0.15% |
| Nitrogen (max) | Not specified | 0.02% |
| Niobium | 3.15–4.15% | 2.75–4.00% |
| Melting | Air / AOD | VIM |
| Grain Size | Not specified | ASTM No. 5 or finer |
| Fatigue Life | Baseline | ~100× improvement |
| Governing Spec | ASTM B443 | AMS 5879 |
Lower carbon reduces M₂₃C₆ carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, removing the primary fatigue crack initiation sites. VIM removes dissolved gases (O₂, N₂, H₂), producing fewer non-metallic inclusions to nucleate cracks. Finer grains (ASTM No. 5+) create more grain boundaries to arrest micro-cracks before they propagate.
Chemical Composition of Inconel 625 LCF Sheets & Plates
| Element | Nickel (Ni) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Niobium (Nb) | Iron (Fe) | Carbon (C) | Silicon (Si) | Nitrogen (N) | Titanium (Ti) | Aluminium (Al) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wt% | 58.0 min | 20.0 – 23.0 | 8.0 – 10.0 | 2.75 – 4.00 | 5.0 max | 0.03 max | 0.15 max | 0.02 max | 0.40 max | 0.40 max |
The 0.03% C ceiling (vs 0.10% in standard 625) reduces carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, eliminating fatigue crack initiation sites. VIM processing removes dissolved O₂, N₂, and H₂, producing a cleaner microstructure with dramatically fewer inclusions. Cr at 20–23% and Mo at 8–10% maintain the same corrosion resistance as standard Inconel 625.
Mechanical Properties of Inconel 625 LCF Sheet & Plate
| Property | Tensile Strength (min) | Yield 0.2% Offset (min) | Elongation (min) | Density | Melting Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 690 MPa (100 ksi) | 276 MPa (40 ksi) | 30% | 8.44 g/cm³ | 1290–1350°C (2350–2460°F) |
Room-temperature tensile and yield values are comparable to standard 625. The advantage is entirely in fatigue performance: VIM processing, lower C/Si, and controlled grain size give Alloy 625 LCF sheet approximately 100× the fatigue life of conventional N06625 sheet under the same cyclic loading.

Corrosion & Environmental Performance of Inconel 625 LCF Flat Products
Corrosion resistance of UNS N06626 sheet matches standard Inconel 625. Cr at 20–23% and Mo at 8–10% provide strong resistance to chloride pitting, crevice attack, and seawater corrosion. Nb contributes additional stability against intergranular corrosion. The alloy handles H₂SO₄, H₃PO₄, HCl at moderate concentrations, and most organic acids.
The purchasing decision for 625 LCF over standard 625 is driven by fatigue, not corrosion. Bellows, expansion joints, and flexible couplings in chemical plants, offshore platforms, and gas turbines undergo millions of flexure cycles. Standard 625 sheet may crack at 10,000 cycles in a given application; 625 LCF sheet endures 1,000,000+ cycles under the same conditions.
Welding & Fabrication Guidelines for Inconel 625 LCF Sheet & Plate
Weld using GTAW (preferred for sheet gauge), GMAW, or SMAW. Filler: ERNiCrMo-3 (FM 625); for maximum fatigue performance, use matching 625 LCF filler wire. No preheat required for solution-annealed material. PWHT is not typically needed (solid-solution strengthened); stress relief at 870–900°C if required by code. Minimise heat input on thin sections. VIM-processed base metal should be matched with high-purity filler to preserve the clean microstructure. Remove all shop soil and contaminants before welding to prevent sulphur/phosphorus pickup.
Industries Using Inconel 625 LCF Sheets & Plates
The Inconel 625 LCF Sheets & Plates find their applications in 5 major industrial applications:
- Bellows & Expansion Joints: In piping systems, Inconel 625 LCF sheets are formed into convoluted (accordion-like) structures. They are used to absorb thermal expansion and contraction in high-temperature pipelines.
- Aerospace Exhaust & Ducting: In the aerospace sector, this material is used for exhaust liners, tailpipes, and ducting systems in jet engines.
- Automotive Flexible Exhaust Couplings: Inconel 625 LCF is mainly found in high-performance or heavy-duty decoupling elements (flex pipes). These are the flexible joints that connect the engine manifold to the rest of the exhaust system.
- Power Generation: In both gas and nuclear power plants, these plates are used in transition liners and seals. Specifically in gas turbines and nuclear reactors.
- Oil & Gas: In the harsh environments of offshore drilling, Inconel 625 LCF is used for flare tips and subsea piping components. They are also found in flare tips and subsea equipment.
