What are Monel Flanges?

Monel flanges are forged nickel-copper alloy components that join pipes, valves, and pressure vessels in corrosive piping systems. Made from alloys with a minimum 63% nickel and 28–34% copper, they gain strength only through cold working. These flanges resist chloride stress corrosion cracking in seawater and handle de-aerated hydrofluoric acid (HF) at all strengths. Monel is the standard material for HF alkylation unit flanges in petroleum refining. They hold strength up to 1000°F (538°C) and outperform stainless steel in HF service, seawater piping, and caustic handling.

Available Grades of Monel Flanges

Nicorex Alloys stocks Monel flanges in 2 grades listed below:

Monel 400 Flange

This is the most widely used Monel grade. Monel 400 (63.0% Ni, 28.0-34.0% Cu) resists seawater, HF acid, HCl acid, and caustic alkalis. Its tensile strength is about 550 MPa with a yield of about 240 MPa in the annealed condition.

Monel K500 Flange

Monel K500 is the age-hardenable version of Monel 400 with aluminium and titanium additions. It reaches about 690 MPa yield strength through precipitation hardening while keeping the same corrosion resistance.

Industries and Applications of Monel Flanges

Monel flanges are used in industries that need strong resistance to corrosive environments like acids, seawater, and caustic chemicals:

Frequently Asked Questions

What ASTM Standard covers Monel flanges?
ASTM B564 / ASME SB564 covers nickel alloy forgings, including Monel flanges.
Monel 400 is a solid-solution alloy with a yield strength of about 240 MPa. Monel K500 reaches about 690 MPa through age hardening while keeping the same corrosion resistance.
Monel 400 resists de-aerated hydrofluoric acid at all strengths. Its high nickel-copper content gives immunity to HF attack that stainless steels cannot match.
ANSI/ASME pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 per B16.5. DIN ratings include PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40, and PN64.
Yes. Monel 400 flanges show a corrosion rate below 25 mpy in fast-flowing seawater. They resist chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting in brackish and saltwater service.

Use ERNiCu-7 filler wire per AWS A5.14 for GTAW and GMAW. Use ENiCu-7 electrodes per AWS A5.11 for SMAW. Preheat to 200–300°C before welding.
