Nitronic 50 Round Bars

Nitronic 50 Round Bars & Rods - ASTM A276 UNS S20910 Supplier in Mumbai

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier in Mumbai, India. We supply Nitronic 50 round bar suppliers with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports.

UNS S20910 (DIN 1.3964 / AISI XM-19) contains Cr 22%, Ni 12.5%, Mn 5%, Mo 2.25%, and 0.20-0.40% nitrogen that strengthens the austenite phase without reducing ductility or corrosion performance. Nitronic 50 round bar offers superior pitting resistance, the benchmark nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel for marine shafting, high-strength fasteners, and chemical process equipment. Also known as Alloy 50, Fermonic 50, Aquamet 22, and 22-13-5. The PREN exceeds 34, placing it on par with Duplex 2205 for pitting and crevice corrosion resistance.

Three conditions are available: Annealed (1066°C or 1121°C water quench), High Strength (HS) via controlled hot rolling or cold working, and Super High Strength (SHS). In the HS condition, XM-19 yield reaches 585 MPa (85 ksi) and tensile hits 860 MPa (125 ksi). The SHS condition pushes the yield above 690 MPa. The alloy remains non-magnetic (<1.02 permeability) even after severe cold work, and is NACE MR0175 / MR0103 compliant to HRc 35.

Bar diameters range from 6 mm to 300 mm per ASTM A276 / A479 and AMS 5764, in lengths of 1-6 metres. Available forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, forged bar, and rod.

Chemical Composition of XM-19 Nitronic 50 Bar

Chemical composition requirements for Nitronic 50 stainless steel (UNS S20910) as defined in ASTM A276 material specification standards:
Element Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni) Manganese (Mn) Molybdenum (Mo) Nitrogen (N) Niobium (Cb/Nb) Vanadium (V) Silicon (Si) Carbon (C) Phosphorus (P) Sulphur (S) Iron (Fe)
Composition 20.50 – 23.50 11.50 – 13.50 4.0 – 6.0 1.50 – 3.00 0.20 – 0.40 0.10 – 0.30 0.10 – 0.30 1.00 max 0.060 max 0.040 max 0.030 max Balance
The 0.20-0.40% nitrogen pins dislocations and stabilises austenite. Combined with Nb and V micro-alloying, nitrogen gives Nitronic 50 bar nearly double the yield of 316L without compromising corrosion resistance.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A276 Nitronic 50 Round Bar

Mechanical performance data for Nitronic 50 per ASTM A276/A479, comparing annealed and high-strength (HS) conditions for strength and ductility:
Property Yield Strength 0.2% Tensile Strength Elongation Reduction of Area Hardness
Annealed (1066°C) 345 MPa (50 ksi) min 655 MPa (95 ksi) min ≥35% ≥55% ≤241 BHN
High Strength (HS) 585 MPa (85 ksi) min 860 MPa (125 ksi) min ≥15% Up to HRc 35
In the annealed condition, the material gives the best corrosion resistance. In the high-strength (HS) condition, it is used mainly for pump shafts and marine bolts, where high yield strength is the key design requirement.

Strength Advantage of Nitronic 50 Bar Over 316/316L

Annealed Alloy 50 bar provides 345 MPa yield vs 170 MPa for 316L, approximately 2× the strength. In the HS condition, yield reaches 585 MPa over 3× 316L. At −196°C, elongation remains above 40%, and austenite does not convert to martensite. Magnetic permeability stays below 1.02 after severe cold work, critical for naval degaussing and MRI equipment. High nitrogen and manganese improve galling resistance for pump shaft applications.

Corrosion Performance of Nitronic 50 Round Bar

Nitronic 50 bar resists pitting, crevice corrosion, and general attack better than 316, 316L, 317, and 317L. PREN >34 matches Duplex 2205. Intergranular corrosion resistance holds even after sensitisation at 675°C for 1 hour. The 1121°C anneal provides maximum IGA resistance. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 compliant to HRc 35. Limitation: susceptible to SCC in hot chloride environments.

Machining, Forming & Welding of Nitronic 50 Bar

Machining requires slower speeds and higher rigidity due to work-hardening. Coated carbide tools are recommended. Machinability rates above 50% of Type 304. Forging range: 1177-1204°C. Weld with Nitronic 50W (AWS E/ER209) or Inconel 625. For aggressive corrosion service, anneal at 1121°C post-weld.

Industries & Applications Using Nitronic 50 Round Bars

Nitronic 50 round bars are very strong, resist rust, and last a long time. Because of this, they are used in many industries around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nitronic 50 Suitable for Cryogenic Service?

Yes. UNS S20910 maintains impact toughness down to −196°C with elongation above 40%. Retains non-magnetic character. Ideal for LNG equipment and cryogenic fasteners.

Nitronic 50W (AWS E/ER209) is the matching filler. Inconel 625 is an alternative. Caution with autogenous EB/laser welding.

Two options: 1066°C for higher strength with good corrosion resistance, or 1121°C for maximum corrosion resistance in as-welded service. Both need water quench.

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) has higher silicon and manganese for superior galling resistance. Nitronic 50 offers PREN 35+ vs 16+ and greater strength for marine and chemical service.
Similar to other austenitics, but requires slower speeds and higher rigidity. Rates above 50% of Type 304 with carbide tools. Coated carbide inserts recommended.
