Nickel 200 / 201 Round Bars

Nickel 200 / 201 Round Bars Supplier in Mumbai, India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier and stockist in Mumbai, India. We supply ASTM B160 bar stock with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports.

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 round bars are commercially pure nickel (99.0% Ni min) bar stock manufactured to ASTM B160 / ASME SB160. The key difference is based on the carbon content: Nickel 200 (UNS N02200, W.Nr. 2.4060 / 2.4066) allows a maximum of 0.15% carbon, while Nickel 201 (UNS N02201, W.Nr. 2.4061 / 2.4068) restricts the maximum, while Nickel 201 (UNS N02201, W.Nr. 2.4061 / 2.4068) restricts carbon to 0.02% C max. Nickel 201 is mandatory above 315°C (600°F) to prevent intergranular carbon precipitation and embrittlement. Most stock items are dual-certified to both grades. Pure Nickel bar stock delivers thermal conductivity of 70.2 W/m·°C. The alloy is ferromagnetic at room temperature (Curie temperature 358°C), with excellent electrical conductivity for anode rods and battery components. The annealed Nickel 200 bar has a tensile strength of 380 MPa (55 ksi) and elongation of 40%.  Nickel 201 provides lower work-hardening for improved cold forming. Outstanding caustic alkali resistance drives specification in NaOH evaporator shafts and chemical processing equipment.

Bar diameters span 5 mm to 500 mm in lengths of 500–6000 mm. Forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, forged bar, hollow bar, and rectangular bar in hot-rolled, cold-drawn, annealed, and centreless-ground finishes.

Nickel 200 vs Nickel 201 - When to Specify Which Grade

Key selection criteria and critical purchasing factors for engineers deciding between Nickel 200 and 201 commercially pure nickel round bars.

Parameter Nickel 200 Nickel 201
Carbon 0.15% max 0.02% max
Max Service Temp 315°C (600°F) No graphitisation limit
Work Hardening Higher Lower – better cold forming
Risk Above 315°C Carbon precipitation Safe
Caustic Service Good to 315°C Mandatory for molten NaOH
Typical Use Anodes, plating, general Caustic evaporators, electronics

Below 315°C in non-caustic service, Nickel 200 and dual-certified 200/201 bars are interchangeable. Above 315°C -especially for caustic soda evaporators and NaOH handling -Nickel 201 (0.02% C max) must be specified.

Chemical Composition of Nickel 200 & 201 Bar

Detailed chemical composition requirements for Nickel 200 and 201 alloys, as per ASTM B160 specifications, focusing on the unique composition of nickel.

Element Nickel (Ni) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Iron (Fe) Silicon (Si) Copper (Cu) Sulphur (S)
Nickel 200 (N02200) 99.0 min 0.15 max 0.35 max 0.40 max 0.35 max 0.25 max 0.010 max
Nickel 201 (N02201) 99.0 min 0.02 max 0.35 max 0.40 max 0.35 max 0.25 max 0.010 max

The only meaningful chemical difference is carbon. Nickel 201’s 0.02% C max prevents intergranular graphitisation above 315°C, making it mandatory for hot caustic and high-temperature service.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM B160 Nickel 200 & 201 Round Bar

Mechanical properties of Nickel 200 and 201 alloys in the annealed state, including yield strength and elongation, as per ASTM B160 specifications.

Material Property (Annealed) Tensile (min) Yield 0.2% (min) Elongation (min) Hardness
Nickel 200 Annealed 380 MPa (55 ksi) 103 MPa (15 ksi) 40% 90–140 HB
Nickel 201 Annealed 345 MPa (50 ksi) 103 MPa (15 ksi) 40% 65–120 HB

Cold-drawn condition raises Nickel 200 tensile to 483 MPa (70 ksi) and yield to 276 MPa (40 ksi) with 15% elongation. Nickel 201 has a lower work-hardening rate, making it better suited for spinning, deep drawing, and cold forming.

Physical, Thermal & Electrical Properties of Nickel 200 / 201 Bar

Important physical properties, such as density and thermal conductivity, for Nickel 200 and 201 alloys are the same for both high-purity alloys.

Property Density Melting Point Curie Temperature Elastic Modulus Thermal Conductivity (25°C) Thermal Expansion (20–100°C) Electrical Resistivity (25°C)
Value 8.89 1435–1440 358 205 70.2 13.3 × 10⁻⁶ 0.096
Unit g/cm³ °C °C GPa W/m·°C /°C µΩ·m

Nickel 200/201 bar is ferromagnetic at room temperature. Thermal conductivity at 70.2 W/m·°C is 3× Monel 400 and 4× SS 304 -a key selection factor for heat-transfer applications. Excellent electrical conductivity drives use in anodes, battery components, and connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Difference Between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 Bar?

Carbon content: Nickel 200 allows 0.15% C max; Nickel 201 restricts it to 0.02% max. Above 315°C, Nickel 200 can suffer intergranular carbon precipitation. Nickel 201 is mandatory for hot caustic service. Below 315°C, both perform identically.

A dual-certified bar meets both UNS N02200 and N02201 requirements -carbon is controlled to ≤0.02%. This is standard practice and gives maximum versatility for both low- and high-temperature applications.

Yes. Both grades are ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 358°C. This is a selection advantage for magnetic shielding and transducer applications.

Yes. Nickel 200 is acceptable for direct food contact. It resists food acids and alkalis without imparting taste or odour.
