Monel 400 Round Bars

Monel 400 Round Bars – ASTM B164 UNS N04400 Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified supplier and stockist in Mumbai, India. We supply Alloy 400 bar stock manufactured according to the ASTM B164 / ASME SB164 standard.

Monel 400 round bar is a solid-section nickel-copper alloy (67% Ni, 31% Cu) in bar stock form. This single-phase FCC solid-solution alloy (UNS N04400, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4360) resists hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to boiling, is highly immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and retains ductility down to cryogenic temperatures with no brittle transition. Monel 400 bar is strengthened by cold work only; it is not heat-treatable. Each of our Monel 400 round bars are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI reports. Annealed bars reach 517 MPa (75 ksi) tensile strength and 35% elongation. Cold-drawn bars push yield to 379 MPa (55 ksi) for high-load shaft and fastener applications. Service temperature spans cryogenic (–196°C) to 538°C (1000°F). Monel 400 exhibits slight ferromagnetism below its Curie temperature range of approximately 21–49°C, depending on composition and cold work. Monel 400 is NACE MR-01-75 listed for sour gas service and ASME BPVC approved (Sections III and VIII). It has a density of 8.80 g/cm³.

Diameters span 3 mm to 500 mm in lengths of 1000–6000 mm. Forms include round bar, hex bar, flat bar, square bar, forged bar, bright bar, black bar, hollow bar, and rod in hot-rolled, cold-drawn, centreless-ground, and forged finishes. ASTM B164 also covers UNS N04405, a free-machining variant with controlled sulphur for automatic screw machine work. Key industries served include marine & offshore, oil & gas processing, chemical processing, power generation, pulp & paper, and aerospace & defence.

Monel 400 Bar vs Monel K500 Bar – Selection Guide

Key comparison for bar stock selection covers parameters like strength, machinability, magnetic properties and common applications.

Parameter Monel 400 Monel K500
Strengthening Solid solution Precipitation hardened
Tensile (min) 517 MPa 965 MPa (aged)
Yield (min) 207 MPa 690 MPa (aged)
Hardness 110–185 HB 250–350 HB (aged)
Machinability Good Moderate (harder)
Magnetic at RT Slightly Non-magnetic
Typical Use Shafts, stems, fasteners Pump shafts, drill collars

Specify Monel 400 when corrosion resistance is primary and moderate strength is sufficient. Choose Monel K500 round bar when high strength is needed for pump shafts, drill collars, and springs.

Chemical Composition of Monel 400 Bar & Rod

Monel 400 chemical composition of round bar and rod as per ASTM B164, UNS N04400 is mentioned in the table given below:

Nickel (Ni) + Cobalt (Co) Copper (Cu) Iron (Fe) Manganese (Mn) Carbon (C) Silicon (Si) Sulphur (S)
63.0 min 28.0 – 34.0 2.5 max 2.0 max 0.3 max 0.5 max 0.024 max

UNS N04405 (free-machining variant) has controlled sulphur at 0.025–0.060% for improved chip breaking in automatic screw machine operations. All other elements remain identical to N04400.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM B164 Monel 400 Round Bar

Monel 400 mechanical properties as per ASTM B164, including tensile and yield strength, elongation, and hardness in the annealed and cold-drawn conditions is covered below:

Property Tensile (min) Yield 0.2% (min) Elongation (min) Hardness
Annealed (A) 517 MPa (75 ksi) 207 MPa (30 ksi) 35% 110–185 HB
Cold Drawn (T) 586 MPa (85 ksi)* 379 MPa (55 ksi)* 15%*

*Cold-drawn values for diameter ≤12.7 mm. Larger bars: 552 MPa tensile, 345 MPa yield, 20% elongation. Cold drawing increases yield from 207 to 379 MPa for high-load shaft applications.

Machinability & Fabrication of Monel 400 Bar

Monel 400 machinability is possible with carbide tooling at 18–30 m/min cutting speed for turning in the annealed condition. The work-hardening rate is between mild steel and SS 304. Use fresh carbide tools with positive rake angles and heavy, steady feeds to avoid rubbing. UNS N04405 (free-machining) is preferred for high-volume screw machine work.

Hot forging the round bar at 649–1177°C is recommended. Avoid working below 649°C. Weld by GTAW, GMAW, or SMAW using ERNiCu-7 filler. No PWHT is required. Stress-relieve cold-drawn bars at 538°C to stabilise dimensions without losing strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ASTM Standard Covers Monel 400 Round Bar?

ASTM B164 / ASME SB164 covers UNS N04400 and N04405 rod, bar, and wire. AMS 4675 for aerospace.

Both are nickel-copper alloys under ASTM B164. N04405 has controlled sulphur (0.025–0.060%) for better chip breaking in screw machine work. All other elements match N04400. Choose N04405 for high-volume CNC turning.

Nicorex Alloys stocks Monel 400 round bar in diameters from 3 mm to 500 mm. Standard mill lengths are 1000 mm to 6000 mm. Custom diameters, cut lengths, and centreless-ground bars with tight tolerance (h8, h9) are available on request.

Monel 400 round bar is slightly ferromagnetic at room temperature (Curie temp 21–49°C). For non-magnetic needs, Monel K500 age-hardened bar offers near-zero permeability.

The maximum service temperature for Monel 400 bar is 538°C (1000°F) for continuous service. For intermittent or short-term exposure, temperatures up to 600°C may be tolerated. The alloy stays ductile to –196°C with no brittle transition.

The price of Monel 400 round bar in India is Rs 2000-3000 per kg. It depends on diameter, length, quantity, condition (annealed or cold drawn), and prevailing nickel-copper market rates. Contact Nicorex Alloys with your specific requirements for a same-day quotation. Pricing is provided per kg or per piece, depending on order volume.
