17-4PH Stainless Steel Round Bar

17-4PH (UNS S17400) Stainless Steel Round Bar Supplier in Mumbai, India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified supplier and stockist based in Mumbai, India. We supply 17-4PH (UNS S17400) Stainless steel round bar according to ASTM A564 / ASME SA564, Type 630, and AMS 5643.

17-4PH round bar is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel. UNS S17400 (W.Nr. 1.4542 / AISI 630 / SUS 630) contains approximately 17% chromium, 4% nickel, and 4% copper with niobium additions that trigger precipitation strengthening during age-hardening heat treatment. In the H900 condition, this bar delivers tensile strength up to 190 ksi (1310 MPa), yield strength of 170 ksi (1170 MPa), and hardness of 40–47 HRC. We supply UNS S17400 round bar with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates. 17-4 PH stainless steel bar maintains high strength and durability at temperatures up to 315°C (600°F) for structural service. It provides oxidation resistance to 600°C for intermittent exposure. The alloy is magnetic in all conditions and responds to a single-step ageing cycle, producing a wide strength-to-toughness spectrum from Condition A through H1150D.

Diameters of 17-4PH SS round bar range from 4 mm to 400 mm in lengths of 1 to 6 metres, supplied in Condition A or aged to H900 through H1150D. They are available in forms like round bar, hex bar, square bar, flat bar, forged bar, bright bar, and rod. These bars serve key industries like oil & gas, aerospace & defence, chemical & petrochemical processing, power generation, marine & offshore, food & pharmaceutical processing, and nuclear.

17-4PH vs 15-5PH vs SS 304

Procurement teams frequently evaluate 17-4PH against 15-5PH and standard austenitic SS 304 round bar. The comparison below addresses the key decision factors:
Property 17-4PH 15-5PH SS 304
Type Martensitic PH Martensitic PH Austenitic
Tensile (H900/Ann.) 190 ksi 190 ksi 75 ksi
Yield (H900/Ann.) 170 ksi 170 ksi 30 ksi
Transverse Toughness Good Superior Excellent
Corrosion ≈ 304 Slightly < 304 Baseline
Magnetic Yes Yes No
ASTM Bar Spec A564 T630 A564 XM-12 A276
17-4PH is preferred when hardness and machinability matter. 15-5PH suits aerospace needs for better transverse toughness. SS 304 is selected only when strength is not a driver; Alloy 630 delivers 2–3× the yield.

Chemical Composition of 17-4PH Round Bar

The chemical composition of 17-4PH (UNS S17400) round bar as per ASTM A564, Type 630 is given in the table below:
Element Chromium (Cr) Nickel (Ni) Copper (Cu) Niobium + Tantalum (Cb+Ta) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Phosphorus (P) Sulphur (S) Iron (Fe)
Composition 15.00 – 17.50 3.00 – 5.00 3.00 – 5.00 0.15 – 0.45 0.07 max 1.00 max 1.00 max 0.040 max 0.030 max Balance
Chromium provides the passive film for corrosion resistance. Copper and niobium drive precipitation hardening: during ageing, copper-rich precipitates form within the martensitic matrix and raise strength. Nickel contributes toughness.

Mechanical Properties of 17-4PH Stainless Steel Bar

17-4PH mechanical properties vary by age-hardening condition. Values as per ASTM A564 like tensile and yield strength, elongation, and hardness are covered in the table below:
Condition Yield Strength (ksi) Tensile Strength (ksi) Elongation (%) Reduction of Area (%) Hardness (HRC)
Cond. A 38 max
H900 190 170 10 40 40–47
H925 170 155 10 44 38–45
H1025 155 145 12 45 34–42
H1075 145 125 13 45 31–38
H1100 140 115 14 45 30–37
H1150 135 105 16 50 28–37
H1150M 125 105 16 50 24–33
H1150D 125 105 16 50 24–33
H900 produces maximum strength for gears and valve seats. H1025/H1075 balance strength and toughness for pump shafts. H1150/H1150M deliver the best SCC resistance for marine hardware. Condition A has lower strength and is not normally used for high-strength service.

Physical Properties of 17-4PH Bar

Physical properties of UNS S17400 are mentioned in the given table below. These cover density, melting range, elastic modulus, thermal expansion and conductivity, electrical resistivity and magnetic properties:
Property Density Melting Range Elastic Modulus Thermal Expansion (21–100°C) Thermal Conductivity (100°C) Electrical Resistivity (21°C) Specific Heat (21°C) Magnetic Response
Value 7.80 1404 – 1440 197 10.8 × 10⁻⁶ 18.3 0.80 460 Yes – ferromagnetic
Unit g/cm³ °C GPa /°C W/m·K µΩ·m J/kg·K
17-4PH is magnetic in all conditions. Dimensional change from Condition A to H900 is approximately 0.0004 to 0.0006 in/in contraction. Consider this in precision machining tolerances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 17-4PH Bar Suitable for Seawater Service?

17-4PH provides moderate resistance in flowing seawater but is susceptible to crevice corrosion in stagnant conditions. Specify H1150 or H1150M for maximum SCC resistance. For static submersion, consider duplex 2205.

17-4PH maintains its precipitation-hardened properties up to 315°C (600°F) for continuous structural service. Above this, over-ageing reduces hardness. Oxidation resistance extends to ~600°C, but structural use is limited. For higher temperatures, consider Inconel 718.

PWHT is strongly recommended. Weld in Condition A, then age to the required condition. Use AWS E/ER630 filler for matching properties. For non-structural welds, ER308L can be used without ageing.

ASTM A564 covers general industrial applications. AMS 5643 adds tighter controls, traceability, and NDE testing for aerospace. Specify AMS 5643 for aerospace; ASTM A564 for oil and gas and industrial use.

The price of 17-4PH varies from ₹350 to ₹900 per kg, depending on the size, condition, finish, quantity, and certification. Condition A bars usually cost less than H900-aged bars as they have gone through extra heat treatment. Aerospace-grade AMS 5643 bars cost more than ASTM A564 commercial-grade bars.
