Stellite Grade 1 (UNS R30001) is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy engineered for severe abrasion and high-temperature wear service. The nominal composition is Co balance, Cr 28–32%, W 11–13%, and C 2.0–3.0%. A high carbon content promotes a dense network of M7C3 chromium-tungsten carbides throughout the cobalt matrix, giving this grade a high hardness (50–58 HRC). It has a density of 8.69 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³), and the melting range spans from 1248 to 1290°C (2278–2355°F). Stellite 1 bar retains working hardness above 760°C (1400°F), a threshold where tool steels and most nickel alloys soften. Round bars are available in cast, ground, and centreless-ground forms with diameters from 10 to 300 mm and lengths up to 3000 mm. Alloy rod stock for hardfacing (AWS A5.21 ERCoCr-C) is also kept in ready inventory.
The Stellite 1 round bar is used in industries like oil and gas, power generation, mining, chemical processing, pulp and paper, and cement and glass manufacturing. Components such as pump sleeves, rotary seal rings, valve trim, and cutting blade inserts rely on this grade’s abrasion and galling resistance. Every shipment from Nicorex Alloys includes EN 10204/3.1B mill test certificates, PMI reports, and full material traceability.

Chemical Composition of Stellite Grade 1
The chemical composition of Stellite Grade 1 (UNS R30001) and its key alloying elements is given below.
| Element | Cobalt (Co) | Chromium (Cr) | Tungsten (W) | Carbon (C) | Nickel (Ni) | Iron (Fe) | Silicon (Si) | Manganese (Mn) | Molybdenum (Mo) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | Balance (~50–55) | 28.0–32.0 | 11.0–13.0 | 2.0–3.0 | 3.0 max | 3.0 max | 0.4–2.0 | 1.0 max | 1.0 max |
Chromium at 28–32% forms M7C3 carbides for abrasion resistance and a Cr₂O₃ passive layer for corrosion protection. Tungsten at 11–13% strengthens the cobalt matrix by solid-solution hardening and retains hot hardness above 760°C. Carbon at 2.0–3.0% dictates carbide volume; Grade 1’s high carbon produces one of the densest carbide networks among standard Stellite grades. The cobalt FCC matrix provides inherent galling and metal-to-metal wear resistance.
Mechanical Properties of Stellite Alloy 1 Bar and Rod
Mechanical properties of Stellite Grade 1 vary by manufacturing route. The values provided below covering hardness, elongation, and other details for the as-cast / HIPed condition are provided below:
| Property | Hardness | Typical UTS | Elongation | Density | Modulus of Elasticity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | HRC 50–58 (550–720 HV) | ~550 MPa (80 ksi) | <1% (high carbide fraction) | 8.69 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³) | ~230 GPa (approximate) |
Grade 1 delivers one of the highest HRC values among standard Stellite hardfacing alloys, trading toughness for extreme hardness. The alloy is crack-sensitive during solidification; preheating to 400–600°C and controlled cooling are essential. HIPed bars offer finer carbide distribution and better fatigue life than cast equivalents.
Physical Properties of Stellite 1 Alloy
The physical properties of Stellite Grade 1 (UNS R30001), including density, melting range, thermal expansion and conductivity, and magnetic behaviour are given below.
| Property | Density | Melting Range | Thermal Expansion (20–100°C) | Thermal Conductivity (25°C) | Magnetic Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 8.69 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³) | 1248–1290°C (2278–2355°F) | ~12.0 µm/m·°C* | ~14.7 W/m·K* | Non-magnetic (paramagnetic) |
*Approximate values typical for Co-Cr-W Stellite alloys. Despite cobalt being naturally ferromagnetic, heavy Cr and W alloying suppress ferromagnetic behaviour, making Grade 1 non-magnetic.

Wear Resistance and Corrosion Behaviour of Stellite Grade 1
Stellite Grade 1 ranks among the highest in abrasion resistance across standard Stellite hardfacing grades. The high volume fraction of M7C3 carbides in the CoCr matrix handles severe low-angle erosion and heavy particle abrasion that would destroy softer alloys like Grade 6.
Solid-particle erosion resistance is outstanding. Slurry pumps, expeller screws, and sand-laden fluid handling components specify Grade 1 where particle impingement rates exceed the capability of general-purpose cobalt alloys.
Corrosion resistance is good, driven by 28–32% chromium. Electrode potential in seawater is approximately –0.4 V (SCE), with pitting-type attack rather than general mass loss.
Galling resistance is excellent. The cobalt FCC matrix provides a low friction coefficient against itself and hardened steels, making Grade 1 ideal for bearing sleeves and seal rings.
Limitations: Grade 1 is the most crack-sensitive standard Stellite grade. Low impact resistance rules out repeated high-energy impact service. Hardfacing requires preheating to 400–600°C with controlled slow cooling.
Industries and Applications of Stellite Grade 1 Round Bar
Stellite Grade 1 round bars are specified for 6 key applications requiring extreme abrasion resistance, hot hardness, and corrosion resistance for wear-critical components:
- Pump sleeves and bearing journals in downhole and surface pumps. Rotary seal rings in mud motors. Expeller screws for sand-laden crude.
- Turbine blade erosion shields, steam valve trim (seats, plugs, stems), boiler feed pump wear rings, seal rings for steam service above 500°C.
- Slurry pump impeller wear rings, shaft sleeves, and packing glands. Specified over Grade 6 where severe ore abrasion exceeds moderate-wear alloy capability.
- Valve seats and plug valves in reactors with abrasive catalysts. Extruder screws and barrel liners in polymer processing.
- Knife edges, cutting blade inserts for paper slitters and log cutters. Superior edge retention compared to carbide-tipped alternatives.
