Duplex S32205 (2205) Pipes & Pipe Fittings Supplier in Mumbai, India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified supplier, importer, stockist and trading company for Duplex Stainless Steel S32205 pipes and pipe fittings based in Mumbai, India. We supply seamless and welded pipes per ASTM A790 / A928 with matching buttweld fittings per ASTM A815 with EN 10204/3.1 certification.

UNS S32205 (Werkstoff 1.4462 / ASTM A815 WPS32205), also known as SAF 2205 and Sanmac 2205, is the refined, higher-performance version of Duplex 2205. S32205 raises minimum limits for Cr (22.0% vs 21.0%), Mo (3.0% vs 2.5%) and N (0.14% vs 0.08%). This guarantees PREN ≥34 in every heat. The result: consistent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, particularly in the weld HAZ. Duplex stainless steel UNS S32205 (2205) has a chemical composition of Cr 22.0-23.0%, Ni 4.5-6.5%, Mo 3.0-3.5% and N 0.14-0.20%. The balanced 50/50 austenitic-ferritic microstructure delivers 655 MPa tensile (95 ksi) and 450 MPa yield (65 ksi), roughly 2× that of 316L. CPT exceeds 50°C in 1M NaCl.

Excellent Chloride SCC resistance, maximum service temperature around 300°C, and compliance with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour service. All S32205 material falls within S31803 ranges and can be dual-certified as S31803/S32205. S32205 is the recommended grade for new duplex 2205 projects. Pipes per ASTM A790/A789/A928 and EN 10216-5/10217-7. Fittings per ASTM A815 (buttweld).

Chemical Composition of Duplex S32205 Pipes & Fittings

The chemical composition of Duplex S31803 Pipes & Fittings, along with their proportions, is listed in the table below:
Material / Element Chromium (Cr) Molybdenum (Mo) Nitrogen (N) Nickel (Ni) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Iron (Fe)
S31803 (%) 21.0-23.0 2.5-3.5 0.08-0.20 4.5-6.5 0.030 max 2.00 max 1.00 max Balance

S31803 has a wider allowable range. Material at the lower end (21% Cr, 2.5% Mo, 0.08% N) has significantly lower PREN than material at the upper end. When ordering S31803, always request material that also meets S32205 limits. This guarantees PREN ≥34 and optimum corrosion resistance, particularly for welded constructions where HAZ performance depends on composition.

Mechanical Properties of Duplex S32205 Pipes & Fittings

The following table compares the mechanical properties of solution-annealed Duplex S32205 pipes and pipe fittings per ASTM A790.
Material / Property Tensile Strength (min) Yield Strength 0.2% (min) Elongation (min) Hardness (max) Charpy Impact (min)
S32205 655 MPa (95 ksi) 450 MPa (65 ksi) 25% 293 HBW (~31 HRC) 27 J at -40°C
S32205 has 35 MPa higher minimum tensile (655 vs 620 MPa) due to higher guaranteed nitrogen, a powerful solid-solution strengthener in austenite. Yield of 450 MPa is ~2× that of 316L (220 MPa), allowing thinner wall pipe.

Industrial Applications

Corrosion Resistance of Duplex S32205 Pipes & Fittings

Duplex S32205 is better at resisting corrosion than low-nitrogen S31803, especially in areas of weld heat-affected zones (HAZ). Its higher minimum nitrogen content (0.14% vs. 0.08%) makes sure that there is enough nitrogen in HAZ austenite, which stops pitting due to low-nitrogen S31803 welds.

S32205 is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and works well for storing organic acids, dilute sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. Super Duplex S32750 is usually the best choice for warm seawater service above 25°C.

S32205 is listed in NACE MR0175 for sour service applications. Its higher minimum PREN (about 34 vs 30 for low-end S31803) corresponds to roughly a 10-15°C increase in Critical Pitting Temperature in ferric chloride tests. In borderline environments, this improvement can determine whether the system delivers reliable 20‑year service or suffers early pitting failure.

Welding, Fabrication & Heat Treatment of Duplex S32205 Pipes & Fittings

For welding, use filler metals ER2209 for GTAW/GMAW and E2209-16 or E2209-17 for SMAW, maintain a heat input of 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm, limit interpass temperature to a maximum of 150°C, apply no preheat and no PWHT due to sigma-phase risk, ensure ferrite content of 40-60% in the base metal and 35-65% in the weld, perform solution annealing at 1020-1100°C followed by rapid quenching, avoid oxyacetylene and specify ASTM A923 testing. S32205’s higher nitrogen promotes faster austenite reformation in the HAZ. This gives a wider fabrication window for achieving 40-60% ferrite without requiring as precise heat input control as low-nitrogen S31803.
