HAYNES 188 filler metal (AMS 5801, UNS R30188) is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten wire with a nominal balance of Co 39%, Ni 22%, Cr 22%, W 14% and La 0.03-0.12%. The lanthanum addition produces a tenacious chromia scale that resists spallation during cyclic thermal exposure and improves oxidation resistance. HAYNES 188 welding wire produces a cobalt-based weld that stays strong at high temperatures, resists oxidation, remains stable under heat and still stays ductile at room temperature. Haynes 188 welding wires are available as TIG rods (1.6-4.0 mm × 914 mm) and MIG spools (0.76-2.4 mm). The wire is used for GTAW and GMAW of HAYNES 188 base metal in sections up to 9.5 mm. Storage and Handling of HAYNES 188 Welding Wire
HAYNES 188 is supplied as bare wire, so re-baking is not applicable. Store in original sealed packaging at 15-25°C and below 60% relative humidity. Shelf life is indefinite while the packaging remains sealed and undamaged.
Before welding, clean all base metal surfaces for 25 mm (1 in.) on each side of the joint. First, wipe with acetone or isopropyl alcohol to remove oils and contaminants. Then, mechanically clean the area using a stainless steel or carbide brush. Do not use carbon steel tools, shop rags or recycled solvents on cobalt alloy weld joints.
Keep the following five contaminants, like sulfur, lead, zinc, copper and low-melting-point metals (tin, bismuth, antimony) out of all cobalt alloy weld areas. Even tiny amounts can cause hot cracking and severe weld failure. Do not change the RTW™ surface finish on spooled wire.
