AWS Classification Explained: ERNiCrMo-10
The AWS A5.14 designation ERNiCrMo-10 breaks down as follows:
| Prefix / Suffix |
Meaning |
| ER |
Electrode Rod – bare solid wire for GTAW/GMAW |
| Ni |
Nickel-base filler |
| CrMo |
Chromium-Molybdenum as principal alloying additions |
| -10 |
Tenth registered Ni-Cr-Mo composition (C-22 chemistry: 22Cr-13Mo-3W) |
The SMAW coated electrode equivalent is ENiCrMo-10. Compared to ERNiCrMo-4 (C-276 chemistry), ERNiCrMo-10 carries higher Cr (22% vs 16%), lower Mo (13% vs 16%), and lower W (3% vs 4%). That Cr increase gives C-22 weld metal a stronger passive film for oxidising media. Unlike ERNiCrMo-3 (Alloy 625), ERNiCrMo-10 is completely niobium-free, which avoids Nb segregation in diluted welds on super-austenitic and super duplex steels.
Chemical Composition of ERNiCrMo-10 Weld Deposit (%)
The weld deposit chemistry per AWS A5.14 is provided below. A tighter sulfur limit of 0.01% (instead of 0.02% in some Ni-Cr-Mo fillers) makes the weld metal cleaner and reduces the risk of hot cracking.

A major benefit of ERNiCrMo-10 is that the weld metal contains no niobium (Nb). Standard Alloy 625 filler (ERNiCrMo-3) has about 3.5% Nb, which can segregate in welds on super-austenitic steels (254 SMO, AL-6XN) and super duplex 2507, reducing corrosion resistance. ERNiCrMo-10 avoids this problem and has higher molybdenum, so the weld metal usually matches or exceeds the corrosion resistance of the base metal.

Solution anneal the weld at 1121 °C (2050 °F), then cool it quickly to bring back full corrosion resistance. Always use 100% argon backing gas on the root pass, and keep your weave beads narrow to reduce heat input.

Industrial Applications of C22 Hastelloy Filler Wire
ERNiCrMo-10 is used mainly in chemical processing, pharmaceutical plants, and FGD pollution control systems exposed to harsh mixed acids and oxidising chlorides.
ERNiCrMo-7 filler metal serves 4 main sectors where corrosion resistance and thermal stability are the key factors.
Storage & Handling of Hastelloy C22 & 622 Welding Wire
- Store TIG rods and MIG spools in their original sealed packs in a clean, dry area below 50% humidity.
- store them at 15-30 °C
- Do not place heavy items on spool boxes.
- Before welding, wipe TIG rods with a lint‑free cloth lightly moistened with acetone.
- Use opened MIG spools within 7 days or reseal them with desiccant packs.
- Keep wires away from carbon steel tools and surfaces to avoid iron contamination and loss of corrosion resistance.
