ENiCrFe-2 (UNS W86133, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4805), marketed as Inco-Weld A and Alloy A, is a nickel-chromium-iron coated electrode with a basic low-hydrogen coating for SMAW on DCEP polarity. The weld deposit contains approximately 69% Ni, 16% Cr, 7.7% Fe, 1.9% Mo and 1.9% Nb. That deliberate Mo addition at 0.5-2.5% improves ENiCrFe-2 resistance to reducing-acid environments. Tensile strength typically reaches 660 MPa against an AWS minimum of 550 MPa (80 ksi), with elongation at 45% and Charpy V-notch toughness of 90 J at -196°C. That cryogenic impact value makes ENiCrFe-2 one of the few SMAW consumables truly qualified for liquid nitrogen and LNG service.Available in diameters of 2.4, 3.2, 4.0, and 4.8 mm, it runs in all positions at smaller sizes and flat/horizontal for 4.0 mm and above. It bridges nickel alloys, carbon steels, stainless steels, cryogenic nickel steels and copper-nickel alloys in a single deposit, serving petrochemical fabrication, cryogenic LNG tanks, power generation boilers, nuclear reactor welds and general maintenance across an operating range of -196°C to 816°C (1500°F).

Every batch ships with an MTC 3.1 per EN 10204, all-weld-metal test results and chemical analysis.

AWS ENiCrFe-2 Classification Explained

Following is a breakdown of each character of AWS ENiCrFe-2 and its operational meaning.
Symbol Meaning Description
E Electrode Covered electrode used for the SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process
Ni Nickel Primary alloying element in the weld deposit (≥ 62.0%)
Cr Chromium Major secondary element (13.0–17.0%) for oxidation and corrosion resistance
Fe Iron The third significant element (≤ 12.0% max), differentiates from low-Fe Ni-Cr types
-2 Variant Number Identifies the second chemical variant in the NiCrFe electrode family
The “-2” suffix identifies the second variant in the NiCrFe series. ENiCrFe-1 was the original. ENiCrFe-2 adds controlled Mo (0.5-2.5%) and a wider Nb range (0.5-3.0%) for improved hot-crack resistance and reducing-acid performance. ENiCrFe-3 (Inconel 182) carries higher Mn (5.0-9.5%) with no deliberate Mo. The suffix is not a quality grade; it identifies a specific chemistry. The critical distinction from ENiCrFe-3 is the Mo content and lower Mn in ENiCrFe-2.

Chemical Composition of ENiCrFe-2 Weld Deposit (%)

The table below shows the all-weld-metal chemical analysis for ENiCrFe-2 deposits per AWS A5.11. These values represent the weld deposit composition, not the electrode core wire or the base metal.
Element C Mn Si Cr Ni Mo Fe Nb(Cb)+Ta Cu Co P S
AWS A5.11 Limits 0.10 max 1.0–3.5 0.75 max 13.0–17.0 62.0 min (Balance) 0.50–2.50 12.0 max 0.5–3.0 0.50 max 0.12 max 0.03 max 0.02 max
Typical Values 0.03 2.7 0.5 16.1 69.0 1.9 7.7 1.9 — — 0.009 0.006
Mo at 0.5-2.5% is the key compositional difference from ENiCrFe-3. Nb at 0.5-3.0% strengthens grain boundaries and resists hot cracking during solidification. Actual deposit chemistry varies with welding parameters, dilution level, and base metal composition.

All-Weld-Metal Mechanical Properties of ENiCrFe-2

Mechanical properties below represent all-weld-metal test results for ENiCrFe-2 deposits in the as-welded condition per AWS A5.11.
Property Tensile Strength Yield Strength (0.2%) Elongation in 4D Charpy V-Notch at +20°C Charpy V-Notch at −196°C
AWS A5.11 Minimum ≥552 MPa (80,000 psi) — ≥30% Not required by AWS Not required by AWS
Typical Values 660 MPa (95,700 psi) 420 MPa (60,900 psi) 45% 110 J 90 J
The 90 J Charpy toughness at −196°C is the single most important mechanical value for LNG tank and cryogenic piping work. It confirms ENiCrFe-2 retains ductile behaviour at liquid nitrogen temperatures, a property few SMAW consumables match.

Storage, Handling & Re-Drying Procedures for ENiCrFe-2

Low-hydrogen electrode storage discipline is non-negotiable for nickel alloy consumables. Moisture-contaminated electrodes cause porosity, hydrogen embrittlement risk and weld metal cracking. Dangerous in cryogenic service, where impact toughness is the primary acceptance criterion. Follow these steps:
  1. Store unopened sealed cans in a dry area at 10-32°C (50-90°F), below 50% RH.
  2. After opening, transfer electrodes to a holding oven at 120-150°C (250-300°F).
  3. Maximum atmospheric exposure: 4 hours. If exceeded, reconditioning is mandatory.
  4. Re-dry at 250-300°C (450-570°F) for 2-3 hours. Maximum 3 re-drying cycles; discard after the third.
  5. Do not exceed 150°C (300°F) interpass temperature during multi-pass welding.
  6. Wire spool storage: Not applicable (this is a coated electrode product). For matching GTAW/GMAW wire (ERNiCr-3), store spools in clean, dry conditions, re-sealed in original packaging when not in use.
  7. Inspect every electrode for coating chips, cracks, or spalling before use. Discard any with visible defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of ENiCrFe-2 Welding Electrode per Kg in India?
ENiCrFe-2 pricing depends on diameter, quantity and third-party approval requirements. Contact Nicorex Alloys with your specific needs for a current per-kg quotation delivered to your project site.
ENiCrFe-2 contains deliberate Mo at 0.5-2.5% and lower Mn (1.0-3.5%), while ENiCrFe-3 carries no deliberate Mo and higher Mn (5.0-9.5%). ENiCrFe-2 offers better resistance to reducing acids. ENiCrFe-3 may offer marginally better positional weldability. ENiCrFe-2 also has a higher Ni minimum (62% vs 59%).
Yes. ENiCrFe-2 is a standard consumable for SMAW of 9% Ni steel (ASTM A553 Type I) in LNG tank fabrication. The weld deposit delivers approximately 90 J Charpy impact at -196°C, exceeding typical cryogenic service requirements.
ENiCrFe-2 weld deposits serve continuously up to 816°C (1500°F) in oxidising atmospheres. Above this, the 16% Cr may not provide sufficient long-term oxidation resistance. Consider ENiCrCoMo-1 (Alloy 617) or ENiCrFe-7 (Alloy 690) for higher-temperature applications.
Yes. Nicorex Alloys sources ENiCrFe-2 from certified manufacturers with approvals including ABS, DNV, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds Register, TÜV, and KTA. Specify your required approval at the enquiry. Every batch ships with MTC 3.1 per EN 10204.
Avoid ENiCrFe-2 in highly aggressive chloride environments (concentrated HCl, hot seawater, FGD with >1000 ppm Cl⁻). Its 1.9% Mo is insufficient for severe pitting; use ENiCrMo-3 (~9% Mo) or ENiCrMo-4 (~16% Mo) instead. Do not use it to match high-Mo base metals such as Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276. It does not support vertical-down welding. For simple carbon-to-stainless dissimilar joints below 300°C, E309L-16 is more cost-effective.
