AWS Class ERTi-2 MIG & TIG

AWS A5.16 ERTi-2 (Titanium Grade 2) TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified Mumbai-based supplier and stockist of ERTi-2 titanium welding wire, classified under AWS A5.16 / ASME SFA-5.16. It is classified as UNS R50120 and AMS 4941.

ERTi-2, also known as Titanium Grade 2 filler wire, CP-Ti Grade 2 TIG rod, STi-0120, or unalloyed titanium filler rod, is the most commonly used commercially pure (CP) titanium filler metal worldwide. Its minimum tensile strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi) satisfies all CP titanium code requirements. The controlled oxygen content (0.08-0.16%) keeps the weld metal ductile enough for orbital welding and tube-to-tubesheet joints. ERTi-2 is used for GTAW (DCEN) and GMAW (DCEP) with 100% argon shielding gas (99.995% UHP). A back purge and trailing shield are mandatory and must be maintained until the weld cools below 427°C (800°F). ERTi-2 (Titanium Grade 2) is a TIG and MIG filler metal for welding commercially pure titanium where high corrosion resistance and moderate strength are required. ERTi-2 is a cost-effective choice because it gives enough strength for pressure vessels, piping and heat exchangers while still being easy to form and weld. It is supplied as TIG rods in several diameters, packed in sealed tubes and as MIG wire on vacuum-sealed spools in different sizes.

ERTi-2 is a TIG and MIG filler metal used for welding commercially pure titanium alloys in applications that demand high corrosion resistance and moderate mechanical strength. We supply these rods and wires with EN 10204/3.1B mill test certificates covering full interstitial analysis.

ERTi-2 Welding Wire Specifications

This table explains the AWS classification ERTi-2, detailing electrode designation and the titanium base element.
AWS Classification ERTi-2
UNS R50120
Welding Processes GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), PAW
Polarity (GTAW): DCEN (GMAW): DCEP
Shielding / Back Purge 100% Argon 99.995% UHP; back purge mandatory
TIG Rod Diameters 1.0, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4, 3.2, 4.0 mm
MIG Wire Diameters 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6 mm

AWS Classification Explained: What Does ERTi-2 Mean?

This table explains the AWS classification ERTi-2.
Component Identifier Meaning
ER Electrode / Rod Indicates the wire can be used as a continuous Electrode (GMAW/MIG) or a cutoff Rod (GTAW/TIG).
Ti Titanium Identifies Titanium as the primary base element of the alloy.
2 Grade 2 Specifies the chemical purity level. Grade 2 is “Commercially Pure” (CP) and is the most widely used titanium grade.
ERTi-2 is widely used because its 345 MPa strength meets almost all CP titanium pressure code requirements, and its controlled oxygen level keeps the weld flexible for orbital and thin-wall tube welding.

Chemical Composition of ERTi-2 Wire per AWS A5.16

This table presents chemical composition limits of ERTi-2 wire per AWS A5.16, it includes interstitial elements and titanium balance requirements.
Specification Nitrogen (N) Carbon (C) Hydrogen (H) Iron (Fe) Oxygen (O) Titanium (Ti)
AWS A5.16 ERTi-2 Requirement (%) 0.015 max 0.03 max 0.005 max (rod); 0.008 max (electrode) 0.12 max 0.08–0.16 Remainder
Oxygen is tightly controlled between 0.08-0.16%. The low end ensures enough weld strength, and the high end avoids loss of ductility. The Fe limit (0.12% max) is lower than in the Grade 2 plate (0.30%), so the weld metal stays cleaner than the base metal.

All-Weld-Metal Mechanical Properties of ERTi-2 TIG Welding Rod

This table summarises all-weld-metal mechanical properties of ERTi-2, including tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness per AWS A5.16 standards.
Specification Tensile Strength Yield Strength (0.2%) Elongation Hardness
AWS A5.16 Minimum 345 MPa (50 ksi) Not specified Not specified Not specified
Typical 380–420 MPa ~275 MPa (40 ksi) ~20% ~160–200 HV
ERTi-2 weld strength (345 MPa) matches Grade 2 titanium, so it’s a true matching filler. Any air contamination makes the weld hard and brittle, so pure shielding gas is essential.

Base Metal Compatibility and ASME Section IX Data for ERTi-2

This table shows which titanium grades ERTi-2 can weld, along with their UNS numbers and P-Numbers.

Base Metal UNS P-No. Notes
Grade 1 (CP Ti) R50250 P-51 Overmatch (~345 vs ~240 MPa)
Grade 2 (CP Ti) R50400 P-51 Matching, primary application
Grade 7 (Ti-0.2Pd) R52400 P-52 No Pd in weld; ERTi-7 for full Pd benefit
Grade 12 (Ti-Mo-Ni) R53400 P-52 ERTi-12 preferred for matching corrosion

Industrial Welding Applications of ERTi-2 (Titanium Grade 2) Filler Wire

ERTi-2 is specified wherever CP titanium fabrication requires code compliance and corrosion resistance at competitive cost.
Industrial Applications

Storage and Handling of ERTi-2 Titanium Welding Wire

Store the wire in its original sealed packaging and reseal with desiccant after each use. Keep it in a clean, dry, climate-controlled area at 15–30°C with humidity below 60%. Store it away from ferrous materials and metals like copper, cadmium, zinc, and lead, and keep it out of carbon steel work areas. Before welding, clean the wire with acetone and handle it only with clean gloves. Use dedicated stainless steel brushes for titanium. Unopened TIG rods and MIG spools have an indefinite shelf life, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates must show full interstitial analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of ERTi-2 TIG rod per kg in India?
In India, ERTi-2 TIG rods usually cost INR 8,000–15,000 per kg, depending on size, order quantity and certifications. Contact Nicorex Alloys for exact current prices.
Its 345 MPa minimum tensile strength meets almost all CP titanium code requirements and still keeps the weld flexible. ERTi-1 is too weak; ERTi-3 and ERTi-4 are harder to weld.
Yes, but the weld won’t contain palladium, so crevice corrosion resistance at the joint decreases. Use ERTi-7 when you need full palladium protection through the weld.
Use 100% argon at 99.995% (UHP) purity for both the main shielding gas and the back purge. Argon/helium mixes are allowed for MIG (GMAW).
The main users of ERTi-2 are desalination plants, chemical plants with chloride and acid service, and power plants that use titanium condenser tubing in fossil and nuclear stations.
Titanium weld quality is judged by colour. Silver or bright is acceptable. Straw or light gold is borderline. Dark gold, purple, blue, or dark blue are rejected. Grey with white powder is severely contaminated and must be re-welded.
Do not use ERTi-2 for Grade 5 titanium, for severe reducing acids or critical crevice corrosion.
