ERNICR-7 Welding Wire

ERNiCr-7 Welding Wire Supplier — Inconel® Filler Metal 72M | AWS A5.14 | UNS N06073

Nicorex Alloys is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, Mumbai-based supplier and stockist of ERNiCr-7 welding wire, classified under AWS A5.14 / ASME SFA-5.14 with the UNS designation N06073. It is sold commercially as Inconel Filler Metal 72 (GTAW rod) and Inconel Filler Metal 72M (GMAW spool wire).

This nickel-chromium filler carries one of the highest chromium contents of any AWS A5.14 classification. That extreme chromium level forms a dense Cr₂O₃ oxide barrier that stops sulfidation, fuel-ash corrosion and metal dusting. ERNiCr-7 wire has a nominal balance of ~60% Ni, 36.0-39.0 Cr, 0.50-1.50% Al, 0.50-1.00% Ti, and 0.30-1.10% Nb+Ta. Its primary role is overlay cladding of carbon steel and Cr-Mo boiler tubes (SA213-T2, T11, T22, T91) in coal-fired and waste-to-energy power plants. The wire also joins Inconel 690 (UNS N06690) and Inconel 671 (UNS N06671) to themselves and to steels. Compatible welding processes include GTAW, GMAW, SAW, ESW and PAW, with automatic GTAW being the standard method for waterwall panel overlay. Typical all-weld-metal tensile strength falls between 580 and 650 MPa, and the overlay hardens in service to HRC 46-52 after prolonged high-temperature exposure.

TIG rods (FM 72) come in 1.6 to 3.2 mm diameters; MIG spools (FM 72M) in 0.8 to 1.6 mm. Every shipment is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates and PMI verification where required.

Understanding the ERNiCr-7 Classification

Given below is a breakdown of ERNiCr-7 according to the AWS naming system.
Component Meaning Functions
ER Electrode or Rod Indicates the filler metal can be used as a continuous electrode or in rod form.
Ni Nickel Identifies Nickel as the primary base element of the alloy.
Cr Chromium Identifies Chromium as the principal alloying addition.
-7 7th variant Specifies this as the seventh distinct chemical composition in the NiCr family.

Weld Deposit Chemical Composition AWS ERNiCr-7

According to AWS A5.14, the chemical composition of ERNiCr-7 and its key alloying elements are provided in the table below:
Specification Nickel (Ni) Chromium (Cr) Iron (Fe) Carbon (C) Manganese (Mn) Silicon (Si) Aluminium (Al) Titanium (Ti) Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta) Phosphorus (P) Sulphur (S) Copper (Cu) Cobalt (Co)
Composition (wt%) Remainder (~55–60) 36.0–39.0 1.0 max 0.03 max 1.0 max 0.75 max 0.50–1.50 0.50–1.00 0.30–1.10 0.02 max 0.015 max 0.50 max 0.12 max
Aluminium (0.50-1.50%) and titanium (0.50-1.00%) make the weld metal stronger and help it harden over time during long-term boiler service. Niobium plus tantalum (0.30-1.10%) makes the weld structure finer and more uniform.

All-Weld-Metal Mechanical Properties of ERNiCr-7

Typical all-weld-metal mechanical properties of ERNiCr-7 in the as-deposited condition are listed below.
Specification Tensile Strength (typical) As-Deposited Ductility Service Hardness (after 6 yrs at ~650°C) Service-Hardening Effect
Value 580–650 MPa (84–94 ksi) Good (suitable for overlay) HRC 46–52 Overlay hardens during prolonged high-temperature exposure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Inconel FM 72 and FM 72M?
FM 72 is a TIG (GTAW) rod supplied in cut lengths. FM 72M is a MIG (GMAW) wire supplied on spools. Both are AWS A5.14 ERNiCr-7 with the same chemistry, but FM 72M is optimised for automatic waterwall overlay with continuous wire feed.
Yes. The overlay gradually hardens to HRC 46–52 after years at about 650°C, which improves its resistance to erosion.
ERNiCr-7 contains 36-39% Cr, the highest of any AWS A5.14 filler. For comparison, ERNiCrFe-7 (Inconel 52) contains 28-31.5%, ERNiCr-3 (Inconel 82) contains 18-22%, ERNiCrMo-3 (Inconel 625) is made up of 20-23%, and ERNiCrFe-12 (602 CA) contains 24-6%.
ERNiCr-7 wire can be used with the SAW process for overlay. Choose a flux specifically matched to this high-chromium nickel alloy to prevent harmful reactions in the weld pool.
ERNiCr-7 overlay is mainly used on carbon steel and Cr-Mo boiler tubes (SA213-T2, T11, T22, T91). It also welds Inconel 671 and 690 to themselves and to steel parts.
ERNiCr-7 is not suitable for water-based corrosion service because it has no molybdenum, which is needed for pitting resistance. It is also not a good choice for general-purpose dissimilar metal joining.
