ER 209 Welding Wire Supplier — Nitronic 50W | AWS A5.9 | UNS S20980
Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified importer, stockist, and supplier of ER209 welding wire based in Mumbai, India. We supply ER 209 TIG rods and MIG spools manufactured to AWS A5.9 / ASME SFA-5.9.
Also known as Nitronic 50W, Alloy 209 is an AWS-classified nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel filler wire, delivering a yield strength of 434 MPa (62,900 psi). ER209 (UNS S20980) carries a nominal weld deposit chemistry of approximately 22Cr-11Ni-5.5Mn-2Mo-0.20N-0.20V. Nitrogen at 0.10–0.30% and vanadium at 0.10–0.30% are the two key strengthening elements. Nitrogen interstitially locks into the austenite lattice, and it also inhibits carbon diffusion to grain boundaries, making ER209 weld deposits resistant to sensitisation (chromium carbide precipitation) in the as-welded condition. No post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is required for intergranular corrosion (IGC) resistance. Typical all-weld-metal tensile strength reaches 700 MPa (101,500 psi) with 36% elongation and Charpy impact of 73.5 J at −20°C (54.2 ft-lbs at −4°F). TIG cut lengths are available from 1.6 to 4.8 mm, and MIG spools are available from 0.8 to 1.6 mm on 25 lb (11.3 kg) packages. Welding runs in all positions on DCEN (TIG) or DCEP (MIG).
Primary base metals include UNS S20910 (Nitronic 50) and UNS S20400 (Nitronic 30), with full compatibility for dissimilar joints to 304/316L stainless steels and GMAW overlay on mild steel. The weld deposit has little or no ferrite, so low heat input and convex bead profiles are essential to prevent hot cracking. Key industries include marine and offshore, nuclear and power generation, food and pharmaceutical processing, and cryogenic service. Every shipment carries EN 10204/3.1B mill test certificates.

Base Metal Compatibility for ER209 Welding Wire
Alloy 209 filler wire is matched to nitrogen-strengthened austenitic base metals and also serves dissimilar and overlay joints.
| Base Metal | UNS | P-No. | ER209 Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitronic 50 | S20910 | P-8 | Primary matching filler |
| Nitronic 30 | S20400 | P-8 | Matching filler |
| 304/304L SS | S30400/S30403 | P-8 | Dissimilar — higher-strength joint |
| 316L SS | S31603 | P-8 | Dissimilar — higher-strength joint |
| 321/347 SS | S32100/S34700 | P-8 | Dissimilar — compatible |
| Mild Steel (overlay) | P-1 | — | Corrosion overlay; GMAW only |
For direct overlay on mild steel, use the GMAW (MIG) process only. GTAW and electron beam processes are not recommended for direct ER209 application on mild steel due to dilution and cracking concerns.

Industrial Welding Applications of ER209
- Propeller shafts, valve stems, pump components, and anchor chain fittings operate in seawater where fatigue life and chloride corrosion resistance determine service intervals.
- Reactor vessel internals, fuel storage racks, and primary coolant piping components require weld metal that is resistant to intergranular corrosion without solution annealing after fabrication.
- Mixing vessels, conveyor components, and processing equipment where galling resistance and FDA-compliant corrosion resistance are both required benefit from the nitrogen-strengthened austenitic deposit.
- LNG storage tanks, cryogenic transfer piping, and cold boxes demand impact toughness at sub-zero temperatures alongside high strength.
Storage, Handling & Cleaning Procedures for ER 209
Store ER209 TIG rods and MIG spools in clean, dry, temperature-controlled conditions. Keep wire in original sealed packaging until ready for use. Before welding, clean the base metal and filler wire with acetone or a suitable solvent to remove oil, grease, paint, cutting fluids, and marking inks. Contaminants containing sulphur, phosphorus, or lead cause cracking and porosity.
Use dedicated stainless steel tooling only, like wire brushes, grinding wheels, and handling equipment previously used on carbon steel must not contact ER209 or its base metals. Iron contamination degrades corrosion performance. After welding, brush the weld with a stainless steel wire brush while still warm to remove oxide scale. Chemical pickling or passivation, if required, should be the final finishing operation.
