ERTi-5 (UNS R56400) is a high-strength, 6% Aluminum-4% Vanadium titanium filler metal used for welding Grade 5 alloys.Ti-6Al-4V accounts for over 50% of global titanium alloy usage, and ERTi-5 filler rod is its matching welding consumable. The alpha-beta microstructure, formed by 6% aluminium (alpha stabiliser) and 4% vanadium (beta stabiliser), delivers the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any filler wire in the A5.16 family. ERTi-5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium welding wire deposits reach a minimum tensile strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and yield strength of 828 MPa (120 ksi) with 10% elongation at a density of only 4.43 g/cm³. ERTi-5 weld deposits are roughly 2.6 times stronger than ERTi-2 (345 MPa) but with lower ductility (10% vs 20%). After STA, tensile strength can exceed 1035 MPa (150 ksi). Cooling rate directly affects microstructure: fast cooling produces fine acicular alpha (stronger), slow cooling produces coarser colony alpha (weaker).

Do not use ERTi-5 for CP titanium Grades 1 through 4. The overmatch creates a hard weld zone against softer base metal, risking cracking.

Interpass temperature must stay below 175°C (350°F). Do not preheat, as preheating slows cooling and coarsens the microstructure. Stress relief at 595–650°C for 1 to 4 hours in a vacuum or inert-gas furnace is standard for aerospace work.

Can ERTi-2 be used to weld Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) Titanium?
It is technically possible, but strongly not recommended. ERTi-2 deposits only ~345 MPa tensile versus 895 MPa for Ti-6Al-4V base metal. That undermatch turns the weld zone into the weakest link. Use ERTi-5 (matching) for all Grade 5 welding.
PWHT is not mandatory under AWS A5.16, but stress relief at 595–650°C (1100–1200°F) for 1–4 hours is standard for aerospace and medical applications. This relieves residual stresses that reduce fatigue life. The furnace must run under a vacuum or an inert-gas atmosphere to prevent contamination.
ERTi-5 is a standard Ti-6Al-4V filler for high-strength structural welding. ERTi-23 (ELI) is Ti-6Al-4V with lower interstitials, offering superior toughness for critical aerospace and medical implant applications.
Avoid ERTi-5 on CP titanium (Grades 1 through 4) because the strength overmatch risks fusion-line cracking. Do not use it above 427°C (800°F) continuous, as Ti-6Al-4V loses significant strength. For cryogenic service below –196°C, ERTi-23 (ELI) may be required.
