ER80S-B8 TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire

AWS A5.28 ER80S-B8 TIG Filler Rod & MIG Wire Supplier in India

Nicorex Alloys is an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, Mumbai-based supplier and stockist of ER80S-B8 chrome-moly welding wire, classified under AWS A5.28 / ASME SFA-5.28. Our facility holds every heat ship with an MTC 3.1 per EN 10204.

ER80S-B8, also known as P9 welding wire or 9Cr filler rod, is specifically designed for high-chromium applications that do not use vanadium or niobium modifications. This 9% chromium content offers the best protection against oxidation and hydrogen damage for this type of alloy. The wire is engineered to maintain structural integrity under high hydrogen partial pressures at elevated temperatures. The weld deposit is able to attain a tensile strength of 550 MPa (80 ksi) and a yield strength of 470 MPa (68 ksi) when it is subjected to the post-weld heat-treated (PWHT) condition. There is a requirement for an obligatory PWHT at 730–760 degrees Celsius in order to guarantee the final metallurgical qualities of the joint. This is due to the fact that the as-welded deposit is completely martensitic.

Nicorex Alloys stocks TIG rods ranging from 1.6 to 3.2 mm and MIG spools between 0.9 and 1.6 mm. SAW wire ships as EB8 per AWS A5.23. All welding positions are supported by DCEN for GTAW with 100% argon and DCEP for GMAW. Preheating at 200°C (400°F) minimum is mandatory. Typical uses include refinery hydrogen service piping, high-temperature steam lines, and petrochemical reactor components that require thermal stability.

Industrial Welding Applications of ER80S-B8 (9Cr-1Mo) Filler Wire

The following are the industrial applications of ER80S-B8 (9Cr-1Mo) filler wire:
Industrial Applications

Storage and Handling of ER80S-B8 TIG Welding Rod

Store in original sealed packaging at 15–30°C, humidity below 50% RH. Low-hydrogen practice is critical; the 9Cr-1Mo deposit is more air-hardening than 5Cr grades, raising hydrogen cracking risk. Keep packaging sealed until use; reseal partially used spools. Shelf life is indefinite in sealed packaging. MTC 3.1 per EN 10204 accompanies each lot.

Available Forms, Diameters and Packaging of ER80S-B8 Filler Wire

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Difference between ER80S-B8 and ER90S-B9?
ER80S-B8 is a conventional 9Cr-1Mo with no vanadium or niobium. ER90S-B9 is the modified P91 filler with V, Nb, and controlled N. These form MX-type carbonitride precipitates, giving 2–3× the creep-rupture life at 550–600°C. ER80S-B8 is for P9/T9/F9; ER90S-B9 is for P91/T91/F91. Using B8 on P91 leads to premature creep failure.
Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 730–760°C (1345–1400°F) for one hour per 25 mm of thickness (minimum 30 minutes) follows a minimum 200°C (400°F) warmup. The as-welded hardness exceeds 350 HV; hence, PWHT needs to be added to get it below 241 HV.
Possible but not preferred. ER80S-B8 on the carbon steel side creates a high-Cr HAZ that is difficult to temper.
MIG wire is available in D200 (12.5 kg) and D300 (15 kg) spools, while TIG rods are supplied in 5 kg cylinders with lengths of 914 or 1000 mm. Furthermore, all products are distributed with an MTC 3.1 certificate, and SAW (EB8) wire is available in 25 kg coils.
ER80S-B8 should not be used for P91/T91/F91. Do not use ER80S-B6 for 5Cr or ER90S-B3 for 2.25Cr. Never without PWHT. The temperature should not exceed 595°C, where P91 creep strength is required. It should not be used for dissimilar joints to austenitic stainless steels.
