Monel 400 is a nickel-copper binary alloy (63% Ni min, 28–34% Cu) that forms a single-phase, face-centred-cubic solid solution where nickel and copper are mutually soluble across the full range. This means no secondary phase precipitation, no sensitisation, and corrosion resistance that extends from HF acid service to flowing seawater, deaerated sulfuric acid, and caustic alkalis. It resists hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point. Monel 400 is also known as UNS N04400 and Werkstoff 2.4360. It has a tensile strength of 482–586 MPa in the annealed condition. Yield strength is 172–310 MPa, and elongation is 35–50%. Stress-relieved tensile strength is 586–827 MPa. It doesn’t have a ductile-to-brittle transition even at liquid hydrogen temperature (–253°C).

Monel 400 pipe sizes range from NPS 1/2″ to 16″, SCH 5S through XXS. Buttweld fittings sizes range from NPS 1/2″ to 48″ (elbows, tees, reducers, caps, stub ends). Monel 400 pipes and fittings are NACE MR-01-75 listed for sour gas service. They are ASME BPVC approved.

Nickel (63% min) and copper (28–34%) form a single-phase FCC solid-solution binary alloy. Full mutual solubility means no secondary phase precipitation and no sensitisation. Copper provides signature HF acid and deaerated reducing acid resistance. Low iron (≤2.5%) keeps the alloy in the Ni-Cu binary system. The Curie temperature falls between 21–49°C (70–120°F), so some heats may be slightly magnetic at room temperature depending on composition.

Monel 400 has no ductile-to-brittle transition even at liquid hydrogen temperature (–253°C / –423°F), making it ideal for cryogenic piping. Charpy V-notch impact at –196°C exceeds 196 J for a hot-rolled plate. Cold working raises tensile strength but reduces ductility; the alloy cannot be precipitation hardened.
